By way of introduction- I am looking to purchace my first 911- I have spent a good deal of time looking at 997s and 996s, and have decided I really want an older air-cooled car, specifically a 993. My challenge- I am 6'5" with a VERY short inseam (32")
So thanks to Marc over at International Sports Cars, I spent the afternoon looking at a wide variety of 993s- NB, WB, cab, and targas. Many incredible vehicles....
The good news (for me), is that I do fit in a tagra. The bad news is I do not fit in the car I want- a Carrera S. My head hits the roof when the seat is in the right position. The one car that did not have full power seats seemed to have more distance between the seat and the roof.
Is there any way to maximize headroom? I have STFA, and all I can find is info on more LEG room- not my issue. The 996 could be ordered with a lower seat- could the 993? A sunroof delete coupe would work, but those seem to be rare as the proverbial hen's teeth.
I have a Targa and I love the way I can wear a helmet and still fit fine. I was used on my 83SC to driving on the track with my head tilted over 30 degrees.
You can definitely gain room by using a lower set...the "racing" seats are much lighter and are closer to the ground. That is about the only way you are going to increase the head room. If you head is brushing the roof now just think of your problems when you are wearing a helmet!!
Targa may be the way I end up going- just have always wanted a wide body coupe... although in my head, the iconic 911 is a 73 or so targa in guards red....
Do the Porsche sport seats give you more headroom?
As covered in another thread above, you can mount the seat in the rear mounting holes and gain about one inch of headroom (and one inch of seat travel). If that isn't enough, you will need to make more major modifications, particularly if you intend to use a helmet. In my C2S (I'm also about 6' 5"), I went to aftermarket seats bolted directly to the floor (no slider). this gives me about 1/4 inch of clearance with a helmet on.
