I always think the latest you can afford the better.
You are right though. My older 95 was not as good as my 97. The 97 is better in every way. Might just be a better car too.

I don't even know what a CEL is anyway, so I don't care.....................until it breaks or whatever it does

Ok, Michael. I'll bite.

Having owned a 95 and now a 96, I'll say the varioram (96-98) feels much stronger than my 95 (with a chip). Since the sting of the OBD2 readiness is fresh I prefer the simpler OBD1 car 1995.

Search is your friend.

Its clear... there are no "best years", all are great in their own way. And there is no such thing as a "worst" year. I would not let focus on a year be my guide. Find the nicest car you can afford in a color that knocks your socks off. Keep a little money in reserve for the few repairs and upgrades you'll want to do. If it were me, I'd be letting my planned use of the car be my guide... garage queen... get a low mileage car. Driver? get one that has been well maintained. Want bone stock? Want mods? Get the car that matches your desires.

The year makes very little difference, despite the humorous comments to the contrary.

Any year; go on condition of the car you are looking at. Five cars from any year will feel different and perform differently depending upon how they have been maintained and what sort of driving they have done (urban versus motorway). Keep an open mind and look at everything in your price range and find one that FEELS right to you.

Good luck!

Cheers,

David

Never on my '96. Once on my '97......for a bad MAF sensor, which was nice to know about immediately, as it was not obvious right away.

You know, ca993twin is right.
Just make sure when you find the one you really want that it's a '97 and preferably in a blue color or you will really regret it
