I'm wondering if anyone here in Dallas has experience with Rick and Ricky at 5th Gear and what your thoughts are?

Jeff-

Cliff Blackshear and John Gladwell @ Boardwalk are some the best 993 wrenches in these parts, if you can get past the stealer pricing. (Also pretty far for me to go)

This past weekend someone was saying 5th Gear is the place to take 944s, not sure about 993s though.

I've really only needed oil / trans fluid changes and have used Zims and Mayo Performance.

Hopefully others will chime in.

Best wishes

Ed Mayo at Mayo Performance is also good. It is located in Bedford.

I had a good experience with a PPI at Nine Eleven Enterprises. They did the most thorough PPI I have ever had and spent quite a bit of time on the phone discussing the results with me. I do not live in Dallas, but they came highly recommended by several people.
Good luck

I've had plenty of work done by Rick, especially when he was the shop foreman at Boardwalk. It really depends on what you want done. He is pretty damn good at doing race/track car work, especially on 944's.

There are several in town that do good work. If you live close to Lewisville/Denton, than I would use him. Anything specific that you are looking for?

Well, I've just had a bad experience with Rick. I've used them twice. First time was fine. Just after I bought my car I noticed the steering wheel was not exactly straight. Took it to them to do a 4 wheel alignment and they noticed both front tie rods were bent. Shipper must have strapped the car down by the tie rods. I had 5th Gear replace them. Everything fine.

Just took it in a couple weeks ago for the 30k service. After I get the car home, latter that evening I had the car out of the garage doing something, looked over at the car and noticed the plastic cover under the car in the middle that runs from the driver side to the passenger side was hanging down a bit. When I inspected it I noticed that the screws that hold the cover up were missing on both sides. Ok, not a huge deal. While I'm under there I notice something hanging down by the driver rear wheel. It turns out to be a spark plug wire. Ok, so they missed one. I look up at the cylinders and guess what. No spark plug wires in any of that side. The wires are tucked up out of the way. THEY FORGOT TO PLUG ALL THE WIRES IN ON THAT SIDE!!!

I'm a pretty understanding guy, but come on.

I call Rick the next day and ask him what tech did the work on my car. He said him and one of the other techs. I proceed to tell him what I found. He says he can't believe it. I say neither can I. I wish I would have taken pics! I'm wondering if anything else was missed.
He offers to send a flat bed to pick up the car and check it over. Great.

I know Rick and his son Ricky are pretty good. But it appears he has a couple teenagers in the shop. This is what concerns me. I'm sure Rick is there for questions or difficult repairs, but I would rather know that the ALL the folks working on my car are properly trained.

So, I was just wondering what others have experienced with them.

Should I find a new shop? I think so.

Hate to say it but for the 30K service, I would have taken it to the dealer. No one in Dallas knows much about 993's, which is sad.

I agree, I've used Zims & Mayos & neither know 993s - caused me to purchase a lift for my garage years ago.

The 30K service isn't that complicated.
Pretty straight forward - standard stuff other than change of ATF and filter.
I just figured anyone (reputable) who works on P-cars should be able to go down the check list and do what is appropriate.

It just floors me that they didn't pay attention to the details such as putting the screws back in the undercarriage cover, not to mention forgetting to plug back 3 sparkplug wires!

Damn, I guess the only thing I have to say is that my favorite mechanic is the head tech at Boardwalk, John Gladwell. Now, good luck trying to specify only for him to work on your car.

I get most of my work done at the track by another great mechanic but he doesn't have the 993 knowledge of John. John use to race and prep a 993RSR.

BG, should you have a picture of your 944 on there?

I'll second George on Gladwell, he is a great source of knowlegde and info. He is a great wrench, and knowledgeable on 944's too!

George - well the best place to see the Turbo is up on a lift right now... hopefully ready to go by the end of the week. (Besides, it's cool to show yourself in your engine bay in your own garage!)
