That's odd. Mine had little tabs on the back that go into holes in the plate to which it mounts. No way to rotate it at all.

You're correct. The sensor is attached by a single hex head bolt & kept in its proper alignment by a mounting pin. It cannot be rotated, nor would that do any good anyway since it's generally the switch itself that fails.

BTW, the clearance for the hex head bolt is very limited. I cut off a piece of allen wrench to fit into a 1/4" socket & protrude maybe 1/8". Worked like a charm.

For all who have pitched the wheel... how do you keep the light from going on???

If there's a way (besides pulling the bulb) then I'll pull my sensor too. I have the RS pulley so once my belt goes the alternator light will go on, so this sensor is redundant. I don't want the fan belt light to always be on so I've just left the sensor in place though I'd like to remove it.

Any way to get rid of the sensor and fool the computer???

Jeff
Its been awhile, but IIRC it's a normally closed circuit, so just short the sensor wires after removing the sensor assembly. Alternatively, you could leave it as is and wire tie the pivoting wheel section to the sensor assembly body pulling it permanently back away from the belt.

I'm not sure I get the alternative solution... once the wheel is away from the belt and not turning then the light would go on.

I'd prefer to remove the whole assembly and short the wires if that's all it takes...

I gotta say, removing your fan belt sensor strikes me as a really bad idea. Driving on the track this year, my alt belt light (and everything else) lit up suddenly. I could NOT hear the belt break either. Because my sensor worked, I knew what was up so just pitted next time around. If that were my fan belt, and I had unhooked the sensor, my engine would have overheated and grenaded. No thanks. You guys should think twice before doing this.

The light will stay out. The way the thing works is this: when the belt goes bye-bye, the wheel drops to the right, opening the circuit. Holding the wheel to the left will keep the switch closed.

Yes it's a bad idea, but he said he has an RS pulley.

I have a different car, but I started smelling something burning after a spirit drive on the highway. I look down and the oil temp is a bit higher that usual. No where near too damn hot, but definitely getting too hot. I pulled over to find that the alternator/fan belt had come off. Strange thing is that my alternator light did not come on. So I will need to get that fixed. By the way, I did not hear the belt come off, nor did it actually break. It pulled apart somewhat and was stretched out.

Not sure if the 993 has an alternator warning light, but if it does, wouldn't that should suffice to let you know that you've lost your belt and you can get rid of the sensor? Or is that sensor the only warning? If the latter is true, I'd leave it.

There are two seperate belts (unless you have the RS conversion), and the alternator light will not warn you about the fan belt. I have a couple of spare, used, but good fan belt sensors, if they can help a Rennlister. My warning light problem was NOT the sensor, but the Instrument Control Module!

Steve,

Uhhhhh, not every multiple belt car has had an idiot light. There was actually a time when gauges were enough, amongst other indicators. Idiot lights are pretty though!
