Immobilizer dead .. expensive fix?? help!
hi guys,
Need help.. ive searched all the immobilzer threads ..
i dropped the TT off at the shop for realignment and was told after a few days it would start about half of the tries.
They tried changing all the batteries in the keys, reprogramming the keys, and new DME.
After checking the OBD2 readings, they concluded the immobilizer unit is dead.
When they took an immobilzer unit out of another 993, the car started.
They said, that mine just died.
Any thoughts?
I was quoted about $1100 for the new part.
Whats the best price for this part? how difficult is the install?

yep. I have poorb0yw(Princeton)'s immobilizer. If you've read my old post, I didn't get to use it at all. I also have the 4-digit code from him. I will let it go for the same price I paid... I need to look up my records but it is around $150.

what makes these things just go dead?
should i just get a new one so i dont get stranded somewhere - in this case, at least it broke while in the shop (???.. go figure ).
Is the lifespan around 10yrs?
I can deal with $5k bills to fix leaky turbos and clutches, but, Im really upset about this one as its a stupid alarm box for $1100.
sorry to complain!

Electronics eventually give out... sometimes due to just age, sometimes because of some moisture and corrosion.. etc.
I had gone through this nightmare last year.. and all is good now..
I still have a brand new (factory new) spare extra still under factory warranty until july 2007 if interested! (when you buy factory new, you get a 2 year warranty from Porsche)
PM if you were interested!

That picture is of the alarm module and not the immobilizer. They are different boxes, one under the drivers seat (immobilizer) and one under the passengers seat (alarm module.).

Is there a way to bypass the immobilizer? Geoff's new car has it and it seems like a real PITA, I have not messed with it too much or read up on them, but this "turn ignition half way and press button on key fob" each time is a joke.. what is the process for disengage?
Thanks-
Coleman.
