Its down to personal choice
Having owned two 993's and two 964's I would not be able to decide which was best because they were all great cars.
As for someone mentioning the 996 well I have had two of those and got rid of them and back driving a 1993 964 C2.........

somewhat easier to work on (oil changes).
BTW I had a 964 before the 993 and although I loved it at the time I doubt I would go back after driving the 993.

No, but I have nearly 5 years of ownership with my 993 and know it inside and out. It has needed nothing beyond tires, oil, and gas. Okay, I had to replace the rubber on the clutch pedal.. Getting a new used car is always a crap shoot. You don't know what surprises are under the hood until you own it.
I like my car, even though it is bone stock (OMG, I can't believe I just said that in front of everyone - I am so embarrassed) and if someone came up with a 964 with 44K miles on it and $5K cash for a trade I would politely decline.

Thus would you take a 964 + $5000 vs the 993?

Bruce Anderson always said buy the newest best condition porsche you can afford. I have owned a 87,95,96, Still own a 97 C2S and a 2001 TT. I miss all the porsches I don't still own. :-)

Where did you get this misinformation from
To be fair, the previous owner had tried to bodge a fix with the notorious oil pipe and it had caused oil to slowly drip over time. I paid (over £1000) to have these lines replaced and never had a problem since.
As I said, I loved my 964 when I had it and would defend it furiously. It's a great car and I still miss the classic two front wings shape as you look out of the windscreen.

Many different opinions and all correct to each individuals point of view.
I do not agree with the adage buy the newest because it is the best. The best is what suits your needs and desires.
I have found very little difference in overall feel between the 964 and 993 models. The 993's rear suspension helps refine the ride a little over adverse driving conditions taking some of the raw feeling away from the 964's. Other than that, you are talking strictly styling cues.
If you grew up with the original 911 "bug eyed" look and that is what you like go with it. If you like the more streamline look of the 993 then go with that. Make a list of pros and cons and I think you will find the list to be evenly weighted. Advantages of the times add a few newer gadgets to the 993 yet the build quality (although top notch) is not quite the same as that of the 964. You can see this in the added plastic components and design changes incorporated to make the car easier and cheaper to build. How else could Porsche have introduced the 95 993 for less money than the 94 964?
The 2 cars are like twins, made from the same stock but not identical. Unlike their big brothers the 996 and 997 these cars are the epitome of what the air cooled 911 came to be. The newer cars are a different bread and cater to a different crowd.
I for one looked into the 993TT vs. the 964 Turbo 3.6 and for my needs and enjoyment the 94 won hands down. I prefer the raw feel and classic lines but that is just me. Would I take a 993TT into my collection…in a heart beat, but I would not replace my 94 with one.
Drive both and I think you will find that both are extraordinary cars and then go and look for the best example you can find in the color of your choice and let your wallet make the decision. You won't go wrong with either car so long as it is a good example.
A rather experienced well known Porsche enthusiast once told me, "a bad 911 is worse than a VW beetle but nothing compares to a good 911".
Good Luck, your heart will tell you what car is right for you.

I have owned both and love both. In a nutshell:
If you are value oriented, you will like the 964 better.
If you want the baddest ride on your block, you will like the 993 better.
My next car will be a 965. Then 993tt. One step at a time. Try them all.

I thought this was an opinion thread and not a pissing match. They are both beautiful cars. Although $35k seems cheap for the 964 considering it is sitting on $5k worth of wheels alone that are not standard to that car. The C4 widebody 964 is a pretty rare car and just like a C2S or C4S 993 command a premium because of rarity.
