How loud is your A/C compressor?

As summer is here in SoCal, I've been using my AC a lot more. I've noticed that when the clutch on the AC compressor engages, it emits a whirring sound. It's almost like it's got a bad bearing. I can hear it inside the car over the engine. This is the first summer that I've had the car, so I haven't driven it with the AC before. I've never heard the compressor in any other car I've owned, so I'm wondering if something is amiss.

I can hear mine when it cycles on. Also living in a hot part of the country, I am just happy it works. :
However, if you are really concerned, you can always check with CA PERFORMANCE AIRE Scott is a Porsche air conditioning genius. He also runs a very well respected Porsche repair shop.
For factory repair in LA/OC, I would go to Newport Auto, the Porsche dealer in Newport Beach, CA. Be certain to ask for Kevin Kelly, a master diagnostician and overall incredible "wrench". He was the lead guy at ANDIAL a few years back.
Mark Kinninger at Black Forest in San Diego is also very good with air conditioning diagnosis and repair.

I hear mine a lot as I have th eRS motor mounts...they transmit a lot more of the sound of the compressor intot the cabin.
Having said that, I do not drive that much in traffic or around town in stop and go stoplight stuff. If I did, i would not like the effect of the motor mounts.
The good side of th emotor mounts far outweight the downside so I love them. Perhaps your car has the mounts and you didn't know...are you the original owner?
I also cannot remember how much noise there was before the RS motor mounts but it is real definite now. It disapears with RPM and speed so I just go fast as I can!

Mine is very loud -- I hear the same whirring sound when the AC clutch engages. My independent service shop looked at it and said everything was fine. It hasn't gotten any worse. Let us know if you determine that something is wrong. Thanks!

I have always been able to hear the compressor cycle on and off at idle (1997 993tt). Driving, I can't hear it.
Today I installed RS motor mounts. The sound is exactly the same as before.
With the decklid open, my compressor is not particularly noisy. I think the sound is normal; some people are probably more sensitive to it than others.
