How loud is your A/C compressor?

Funny you brought that up, just today I heard a sound and though tranny, alternator? It was a very light gear/ whirring sound, I had the AC/ Fan full balst and only started to notice it getting on the freeway with no radio on. I shut down the A/c and it was gone, on the lower settings I didn't notice it. Checked all under hood and all's well.

There is sometimes confusion through the thread.
I think the noise we are talking about is not openning the bonnet and sticking an ear next to the A/C compressor to hear it working.
The noise we are talking about is:
with the A/C on at fan at lets say 2, and small flake.
Now, you can feel the A/C clutch engaging every 1 minute or so.
When it engages, there is a noise from behind the engine sounding like a big nut in a small can. When the compressor stops automatically, the sound stops. Mine does that.. and the compressor is ultra silent always.

Mine is LOUD. When the AC is on with fan at 2 and small flake button on, I hear (what I believe to be) the compressor it as soon as the clutch engages until it cycles off. It is as loud as the engine at idle, as a reference, from inside the cabin.

Mine is really loud too.
I don't remember it being so loud when I bought the car 3years ago. Seems like it got worse at some point, but I can't remember when. I don't use it that much even here in Texas.
I have the RS mounts too. Maybe the increase in noise comes from the RS mounts.
If you find an answer, I'd be happy to know it.

Help
I live in NorCAL, been really hot.
Drove my 993 to work on Friday, right-side CAB lock motor just runs -- won't release, OK I had to run the AC
The my compressor is making a loud noise also. Gets loud over 2.5K rpms
I'm looking for an update from those of you with a loud compressor.

Mine is also loud (95' 993). I can hear it cycling on and off every minute or so. It sounds like a whirring sound - but the AC is blowing nice and cold here in hot Colorado!

Mine is also very loud. It gets louder as you increase the speed of the fan. I just got the car and haven't had a p-car for almost three years prior to the current one but I seem to recall my 85 cab having the same problem. The car came from LA and I'm sure the air con was well used.

Mine is certainly noticeable switching in and out, loud at idle, discernable at medium speed ...
Got really noisy last year, compressor replaced under warranty - guess where I'm going before the warranty finishes ...
cheers, Maurice

....ahh, guess what? Mine's loud! Did a search and found this thread. Did anyone here resolve the problem with their noisy compressor? (without buying a new one) My initial problem was that I was hearing it cycle on/off too frequently. Going to see if the system needs recharging but would this at all have anything to do with the level of noise the compressor is making? I'm thinking "no" hoping to read a response that says "yes"

If you think the compressor is failing, don't wait for it to grenade. If it does, it can send shrapnel throughout the AC system, and a proper repair will require replacement of a lot of very expensive parts.
If it is noisy, or cycling on/off rapidly, it may just need service--evacuate and recharge with the correct amount of refrigerant and oil.

Wondering (worst case) what a remanufactured compressor runs in $$$$$s?
