Default Stable San Francisco

Does any one in the San Francisco Bay Area have experiences with the Stable on Pine street in the City?

Same here - heard good things but no direct experience. I know that Alan K-something is very well respected for his knowledge of 356s. Whenever I pass by I make it a point to glance inside - always a number of great air-cooled cars in there.

Okay, this post was no help to you, but that's what I'm here for.

As stated above Alan and the Stable are well respected for their knowledge of the older air cooled cars, I brought my last two P cars there for PPI's. However, my real mechanic is based in Marin and he performed a PPI after I bought the last 993
which turned up several items that the Stable did not catch, main seal, warped rotors,. DOH!. The Stable also did not include a compression test which my mechanic does, as it makes zero sense to tune your Pcar w/o knowing if she's CAN to be tuned. The jist of this post is that my mechanic, Rob King(S CAR GO racing in Marin) is race oriented and drives a badass 600+HP 993 turbo, their passion for tuning race cars & 993's is on par with the Stable's passion for 100 HP 356's.

I've used Stable prior to moving to NYC. Good shop, though it always seemed like I was surprised at the price at the end. Seems like it was always a bit off from the estimate. Not that anything wasn't on the up and up, I think just not great expectation management.

Net net did good work though, which is what counts. If you are able to get to Marin, however, like they say above S-Car-Go is insane (in a good way), but still do even just oil changes and such, so would recommend them as well.

My 993 needs a 60k service and possibly a suspension upgrade/replacement.

Does anyone have any recent 993 experience with The Stable?

man, that shop name wasn't the easiest to search for

I had a basic service there a few months ago and was pleased with the service. Not cheap but fair and they seemed to know what they were doing...they caught the fact that my car hadn't had the pulley upgrade and called to get OK before doing the upgrade. All in all it was a good experience. They seem to focus on earlier cars but there were 2 other 993s in when I was in their shop so I think they know all the aircooled cars pretty well.

For what it's worth, when I lived in San Francisco a few years back, I had my 964 serviced by Jim Capps at Cars Dawydiak (located down the street from the Stable). I don't know if Jim is still there, but he was absolutely fantastic, with over 25 years as a Porsche technician.

maybe the outlier here, but I saw the writeup of a PPI from the Stable that a friend had had done on a 993 he was considering and I was not impressed. Extremely superficial, no explanatory value whatsoever. I could glean no methodology in assessing the health of the vehicle from what was presented in the PPI "writeup".

YMMV

Try GDRacing in San Bruno. Gary makes some killer race cars and works on all the 911's from 60s on. I'm not sure about the H20 cooled but I know he'll work on 964 and 993 cars.

If you don't mind going down to the South bay. Go to RMG in Sunnyvale or Don's Autowerks in Campbell.

I take my car to Don's Autowerks

I had the PPI on my car done by Rob King at S-CarGo. Very thorough, missed nothing, and a great confidence builder. Rob does have a very strong reputation with the 993. If they were a little closer I'd be going there for service.

If you're down in Mountain View, I'd take it to Tony Heyer at Heyer Performance. I can't say enough good things about him...
