Aaah..the metric system....
A question for those who have switched countries and therefore systems.
My car is from the UK where [it seems] a mixture of imperial/metric systems are in use. My speedo shows mph in big numbers, and kph but in very small numbers. The computer display shows mph, gallons etc so most of the time i have no idea how much fuel im using nor how fast im going - especially at night, since the dash lights are pretty poor. Therefore I would like to change the on-board computer display to the metric if it possible(?) Is it a matter of just changing the default setting? Or is it a computer system replacement?
Not sure if this would have been done before in the States unless a car would have been shipped in from Europe - i guess.
I would prefer to change the speedo to metric but that would mess with the odometer [which is in miles] and therefore the history of the car.
Anyone done this?

I don't know about the digital side - with the display - but I took my car back to Australia when I left the UK. I sourced a metric speedo froma fellow Rennlister and it was simply plug and play.

The parts list shows different tachs for different countries and different size fuel tanks so I suspect the only way to get the OBC to display different units is to change tachs.
You could get a different face made for the speedo to display the speed in kph rather than mph and keep the miles on the odometer.

Back in the '80s during the push for conversion to SI units, Interstate 19 from Tucson to Nogales had huge signs announcing "This Highway Signed in Metric" and "Speed Limit 55 MPH" on the same signpost... should have taken a picture!

So we buy gas by the litre and talk about miles per gallon ! Some stuff comes by the yard or by the metre !! I guess its a way of getting a lifelong mental arithmetic test in place !!

Thank for the comments. It was interesting to note that some guys dont have these OBC's - thought it was a standard issue - definitely OEM. The functioning is detailed in the manual but there is no reference to the calibration. Will talk to the local dealer.
BTW - in Hong Kong everything is metric, except for the valuation of property, which is priced per square foot (??)
cheers
