Unfortunately, they are to be replaced. They are welded together from the supplier.

Yes they are replaced as a unit. Very expensive. Last one I got was around $700 and a LOT of labor to replace. BIGGEST pain in the butt as the circlip that holds it in is on the inside of the unit...

VB or Chris - what are the indications that this unit has gone bad?

Nothing overt. Essentially you need to test for it..

I remember the amazingly small size of it, it's what 5" round? less maybe and and then the same in length. Very neat & clean welding on the high quality finish body, 700$ does not surprise me, I would have believed more.

And beware the test signs can be deceptive, I had a "suspected" bad unit at the dealer. They incurred all the labour getting it out to then find it tested OK on the bench. The symptoms that lead to the suspicion were gone after re-assembly (and BTW I was not charged).

May I ask what is the background of the query?

Enjoy

Nol

Bob speaks the truth! I made a special pair of thin, extended circlip pliers just for these buggers..

I did the same thing Chris. What a nighmare that clip is. I must have spent several hours the first time I tried to change one getting that thing out....

$700 isn't bad. My old Vanagon Syncro used a similar unit, almost 2x that price when Steyr could be convinced to make a run.
