"But they told me that they could not code any new fobs to the car and I needed to buy a new immobilizer control unit and some new fobs and the price was astronomical !! "

This is correct! Without the immobilizer access code, the immobilizer can't be
be reprogrammed for new keys. If the immobilizer was replaced, most likely
the Porsche dealer doesn't have the newer access code.

Modifying the flash memory in the later 993 DME is very problematic especially
from the standpoint of the OBDII diagnostic system. The 993 has enough OBDII
problems without causing additional ones by modifying the DME. Additionally,
the potential gains for a stock engine are questioanble for 993 DME flash mods.

"but I did notice a difference after the reprogrammed ECU... so it did make a difference"

You ALWAYS notice a difference when you "push" the timing and ignore the
the knock sensor inputs. A VERY common approach to get the performance "feel".

Bottomline line: Check those pistons for broken rings!

Steve,

Can you comment on this?

I doubt Steve would continue to reprogram ECUs if this were the case!

I only paid $80.00 for my independent to program a new fob and it works fine 99% of the time.

What you are proposing seems like a waste of money just because you feel inconvienced by the immobilizer.

Good Luck!............ZP44

Loren:

The only instances I've seen broken rings on N/A engines are:

1) Where an owner failed to use premium fuels (91 or better)

2) Broken distributor drive belt

3) Poorly programmed software

Thankfully, our products do not fall under the latter category,...

"Poorly programmed software" - Steve Weiner -

Which is EXACTLY as I stated!

That's the problem when buying aftermarket chips/software,
i.e. you NEVER really know what's been done or how it will
affect the engine in the long run. Only time will tell!

Loren:

Like any kind of purchase, people need to do their due-dilgence and deal with reputable people offering reputable products.

I simply caution anyone from lumping everything and/or everyone into one category, no matter what that is. Wide-reaching, blanket statements about people-products-services are simply inaccurate and do not serve anyone's cause.

I guess some people feel reprogramming an ECU other than factory stock is a big no-no but what they don't realize is ECUs are programmed by the factory for the best gas mileage and emissions standards (and as long as I can still pass my local smog test, the mpg is not as big a concern for me)

Really, and you spoke to Bosch & Porsche and they told you this was the case, right?
Or did you get some B.S. from those that hype the value of re-programming?

Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone have dyno results before and after programming? I would like to know if any of the software is worth the money. The immobilizer part of the programming certainly doesn't work so does anything else function all the time or just maybe like the immobilizer? Just curious!

I can only tell you seat-of-the-pants feel.. but I can also tell you that steve is honest and upfront to say it isn't a huge HP gain on a NA 993 when programmed properly... IIRC, it is something like 6 to 8hp gain (maybe I'm a little off and it's 11 but I know it isn't anything huge!?)

So maybe someone else has a dyno.. but keep in mind that even dyno results vary... one dyno says one thing and another says something different..

(For example, one dyno might show 3hp gain and another would show 8hp gain for the same exact car before and after but the difference being how the dyno is configured)
..

...and dyno pulls themselves can vary based on how warmed up the car is, etc.

...basicly I don't put a lot of stock in posted dyno results myself...

Although I found it very interesting to see on a dyno that a K&N filter made ZERO difference on an EVO FWIW.
