Dave, many threads over the years on this topic try the SEARCH function lots of info. I belive you'll find the general consensus on this board has been the OEM paper are best over all.........Good LucK!!
Its been stated here before that a stock filtr is all these cars need. A better "mod" would be to drill the airbox eother like the factory motorsound box (see P-car.com for what to do), or you can completely cut out the outside most portion, which exposes the majority of the filter. Both by the way will greatly add to the SOUND (in a good way) that eminates from the rear !!!
From a cheap *** (i.e. me) standpoint... The factory air filter is available for $15.67USD and the K&N filter costs $66.50USD so it doesn't really make sense financially. You would have to drive 60k miles (air filter replacement intervals are 15k) before saving any money. You would also need a recharge kit (every 15k?) for the K&N so that costs another $12.75USD?
The K&N air filter I use is washable and should in the long run be cheaper.
That's why I bought mine... but it didn't fit quite properly, had a hard time making the airbox close completely and the seal wasn't perfect. Back to OEM for me...
I'm more concerned about the quality of the filtering job than (maybe) saving a few bucks. The oem filter does a better job of filtering the intake air, as has been reported in the (many) past threads. Neither the K&N, nor the BMC yield any documented performance benefits since all the air the engine can use is flowed by the paper filter.
I used a K&N for many miles in another car & stopped after I found accumulated grit in the airbox that had gotten past the K&N ... and that was what didn't get sucked into the engine. Never had that problem w/the oem paper filters. YMMV, but I'm sticking w/paper for any engine I care about & hope to have for a long time.
I have a K&N and if anyone wants it PM me its yours for free. It fits terrible and I have noticed zero performance gain. I have the Motorsound airbox and that is good enough. Wish I had read all this before I bought it but oh well. On my Grand Cherokee it did make a big diff in gas milage and performance (acceleration). That just shows you how good a job Porsche did on the intake. Or maybe it shows what a bad job Jeep did on the Cherokee!
