After reading the numerous posts on the issue, there was no doubt in my mind I should have a spare DME relay. So I bought one, and stored it in the fuse box so it would be out of the way.
It hit 95 today in Missouri, and I am literaly stopped at the curb of Kansas City International Airport, and the car will not start. Of all places to be stuck and want to have time to troubleshoot or get a tow of my choice. I am sure the police would be understanding of my alleged car troubles. NOT!
Well, after a few minutes of cussing and a cursory look in the engine compartment, the DME relay comes to mind. Swapped it out. Car started right away. Not even time for security/police to stop behind me and "suggest" I move on.
Thank you rennlist!
Save your "Duh!" comments for the benefit of those that are new and haven't read the old posts or those that have and are teetering on whether or not to buy one. Buy one now!
BTW, 1995 C2 with 51,200 miles. No problems until today.

Don't forget to buy another relay and keep it in the glove box. If you don't, the one you just put in will fail, for sure. If you have a spare, the one you put in will never fail. See Murphy's law... sub section 99-3.

I bought a new DME put it in and put the old one as a spare in my glove box. Got that idea from this board.

Thanks Miller-arch.
I debated whether to make a preemptive replacement or not. Since I didn't, I KNOW it would have been a decent idea. Ironic. Now I am wondering if I had just removed it and put it back in if I would have been ok for a little while (able to get home). Or if I had let it cool down. Something to try if you are in a bind, I suppose, but MUST HAVE A SPARE!!!
Old part number was 944.615.227.00
New part number is 993.615.227.00

Did exactly the same thing -- after all -- ya don't wanna be in a situation where you swap IN the spare and discover (
