Bird Armrest

Definitely does not interfere with shifting a six speed. Its positioning, at least for me, provides the perfect comfortable spot to rest my hand. I use my car as a daily driver, but I do drive like a mad-man.

I don't know if its less "in the way" for shorter drivers with shorter arms, but I'm about 6'1 and I find the armrest makes it a real PIA to comfortably shift gears when its in the "down" position.
Fortunately, you can swing it upwards with little effort and its well out of the way. I only use the armrest when cruising on the freeway and since I rarely do that its usually flipped up.
If my car didn't have it already when I bought it, I probably wouldn't have purchased one, but it is very nice quality with a very solid mounting system.
Be advised: This could add unnecessary weight to your car and add seconds to your lap times though....

I have to agree with 2ndof2. My car came with the Bird Armrest and I couldn't stand it. I felt like it was in my way all the time compared with the one in my M3. Other than getting in my way, I thought it was a well made piece that looked good in the car, so if you think you want an armrest, I can assure you that it is a nice piece. I ended up selling mine to a fellow Rennlister.

To 2ndof2: Great post. You guys just saved me a bundle of money. I don't think I need one now. I never really felt the need for one. The thing is, when I read posts like this about how great a $300+ armrest is, I think I want one, even though I really am fine with my car the way it is without one. I'll come up with any reason to buy something for my car that I really don't even need. I don't have any of my own kids, so... this is kind of my kid.
This time, I'm not buying. In the future though, I'm sure there's an upgrade that I'm going to fall for .

Another satisfied user. Nice thing about it is I ran the Dension iceLink connection and a phone/hands-free charger into the armrest. They are both hot so the phone, hands-free aand iPod can all charge when not in use. Have a cab, so the lock is handy at times.
