One of my rear seat belts has locked up and won't extract. I've found a new one for $140 at Pelican, but any other ideas out there as to where i can locate one (new or used) for less?

These generally have some small issues that prevent them from retracting. You may have to remove it, or just try pulling it and letting it go a number of times. If you do have to remove it, there are some small gears and arms on the side which are readily accessible. Sometimes one of these gets a little stuck and can be freed so that it then works properly.

Bummer! Mine wouldn't retract either, but I took apart the rear section today (4 screws, pretty easy) and now it works fine, just needed a little slack to let it go.

Just curious, what do you use the rear seatbelts for? Surely you can't be transporting human beings in the back seat?

Of course I do - that's what they're for!
My 8 yr old and 3 yr old both ride back there, every day to school in the case of the elder. also, with the airbag disabling switch up front, i can (on occasion) car-pool 3 kids on the school run.

It's a great family car!

Remember that these are inertial belts. You have to have them in the proper position like when they are mounted for them to release once they get stuck.

A while back I read a thread on pelican about replacing the rear inertia belts with more modern upgrades. Has anyone done that?

What a coincidence...my rear seat belts just got stuck...not just one, but both!! I actually have my back apart and the seat belt unbolted to see if I could find anything obvious, but no luck. It just seems stuck to me.

Bob, are you saying that I should re-bolt the seat belt back and hopefully it will work again?

Either holding it at various angles or bolting it in loosely can sometimes free the mechanism.

Have had this problem several times. Removing and playing with it at different angles as mentioned above, has freed it up. Noticed that the PO even replaced the belts several years ago. Use them several times a week hauling the kids.....

As a last resort before you purchase new/used belts IF the rear belts are anything like the older style 964 inertia retractors (the 993 fronts are definitely different) there is likely a single metal ball-bearing inside the unit that has most likely popped out of alignment (the retractors in the 996 contain several metal *****). There are two sides to the unit and both covers are held in place with plastic dowel pins and clips. The side with the flat cover contains a clock spring, DO NOT TAKE THIS COVER OFF. The spring is covered in oil and nearly impossible to rewind without power tools. Take the other side off and you'll find a bunch of plastic gears and the ball-bearing. If the ball-bearing isn't sitting perfectly in the cup the belt won't retract or release.
