Default DIY Engine Rebuild - Part XIII (13) - It would be part 13 eh?

Ok, lets get to the chase.

I found that, since I don't have a fancy overhead lift is to lift the car instead...it helps if you have 14" I beams in the ceiling of your garage. I simply hook the back of the car up to my come-a-long and lift the butt of the car high enough so the engine will slide under...works like a charm..

I used a 4x4 across the rear frame of the body for support and some chains to wrap them.....nice and strong.

A shot of the beam and hoist...you can use a heavy engine picker as well (or so I have heard...won't guarantee that one!).

Yes I am the ugly bugger in the fancy prison-like-clothes. One of the few show you will see of me......I am pushing the engine on a sliding stand underneath the rear bumper.

Now just lower the car over the engine and the engine is ready to be jacked up into the car...

My multijack system...three on the engine and one on the nose of the transmission undeneath. It allows for a fine control of the tilt and roll of the engine for that perfect alignment

....too bad my blue jacks do not reach allllll the way up so that theory get tossed and you end up with this...

And finally this...after connecting the clutch slave, throttle cable, multiple electrics, oil lines, power steering hoses, etc. On the internet it appear to be magic though... ;-)

OK, ready to crank.....hold on....

Click here to see a video of what happened...the guy in the blue is Dennis (AKA C45_Fan), the guy in the white overalls is James, a very good friend and you know the guy in the prison stripes....

TO BE CONTINUED WHEN SOMEONE CORRECTLY GUESSES WHAT IS WRONG

I will give you some hints:

1 - Its not the battery nor the starter
2 - Its not fuel nor ignition
3 - The sound of the engine is the key : listen carefully

Cheers,

Mike

Hmmm. That free spinning sound is unusual - then no turnover. Just a shot in the dark - something with the ring gear?

Nothing with the starter gear or the starting system at all....

I am soo curious! I hope that you are really smiling...

Mike, you are my hero. I have been watching the progress over the last three months. So impressed with your meticulous work. Love the "special" tools you machined. And, I cannot believe that you documented everything!

The suspense is killing me. Please post another video of it starting. You did a great job on this and keeping us informed during the process. I would like to say thanks for sharing it.

I think you're supposed to remove the DME relay when first starting it up after a rebuild, so it doesn't catch while you build oil pressure. Correct?

Since you said not starter related, not electrical, not fuel - I'm (again) guessing that the free running sound, followed by no ability to turn over is key. If it's not something simple (like polarity reversal), then it's something big (like internals not moving).

It sounds as though the starter is fighting compression in all cylinders. Cams/timing? Whatever it is, I guess the engine has to come back out, and I really hope I'm wrong!

Very close but I need more detail....what specifically do you think is wrong with the cam timing (hint)?
