Default Do the .993 DME relays also fail?

The point has been well made (with redundance) that the original .964 part number DME should be replaced right away with the .993 part number unit, or at least one should carry a new unit in the event of failure of the original part.

But once the part has been replaced with the updated unit, is there an expectation that this will continue to be a risk of failure?

The 993 part may be more reliable, but failure can be quick & complete. For ~$25, I still keep a spare in the trunk.

My 964 had a 993 part # and it failed. The original part for the car was a 944#

Both my never-failed original and the never-installed spare are .993 I guess you could say they are reliable.

My 1994 C2 was 8 years old when I bought it. The DME failed, when the dealer tried to move the car out of the showroom for me to have a test drive. He pinched one out of another 993 and put it in my car and it has been fine ever since.

Regards
Robert

When I bought my 97 about 6 months ago... I noticed that from time to time, it would have a little bit of trouble starting. The ignition would turn over and Id crank it...and it would take a few turns at this on occaision to start it.

I decided to switch out the DME Relay and instantly the problem was solved. Car starts 100% of the time on the first try.

I know that my 86 Carrera, the DME relay doubles as the fuel pump relay. When that one failed a couple of years ago, it was cranking but not turning over.... I figured that the 993 had a similar set up and that turned out to be true. Definitely have a replacment on hand...I was lucky that I caught the symptoms before I was stranded.

What's the cheapest source for the relay? Thanks in advance.

I've heard heat from current draw causes the circuit soldier to fail on some DME's. The relay itself is OK, it just can't complete a circuit. Some guys are known to re-soldier the bottom of the board. Voila' repaired! Others advised to inspect the DME soldier circuit. If it shows thin connections, then thicken them up with a couple of passes with the iron and some fresh soldier.

I haven't given my the chance to fail--when I bought my replacement from Sunset, I put it in my car and stored the current one as a backup.
