Default 993 cost of ownership?

Hello,

I'm considering getting a 993. I am infatuated with the car it's looks, performance, legacy, etc. I currently own a 03 e46 m3 with a 100k/ 6 year warranty. I am apprehensive, part of me is saying your crazy to spend 40k on a 10+ yr old car with no warranty!! I'm trying to reason with logic but I cant!

What are the major costs one has to endure when your a 993 owner? I've heard of valve guide repairs, the 30k inspection, constant oil changes?

please familiarize me with your experience's

If you start with a well taken care of 993, the cost of keeping it going is not bad at all.
Do your own oil changes every 4K and save. If you don't beat it every time you drive it, it should last forever.
They are extremely strong and dependable cars. I think they top every sport car made in dependability.
Good luck, Chris

Oil changes every 4-5000 are sufficient, it has 14 qts of oil so it's not as sensitive as you might think. Valve guides are a weak point of the 993s, but a well maintained car with a clean PPI is usually quite trouble-free. You can pick up a pretty nice one for $35k, it's smart to keep a few $$ for miscellaneous repairs, as with any used car.

Very reasonable maintenance costs for a Porsche. Do a search you'll find tons of information here. The question you should be asking yourself is, what is the cost of not owning a 993

Other than brake pads and tires . . . which were shot when I bought mine just over a year ago . . . I spent a couple bucks on 1 quart of Mobil 1. Now . . . if you want to know about the performance and cosmetic mods . . . well then . . . excuse me while I whip out my calculator.

I am also interested in a 993. Search for my thread on valve guide repair cost. Search for "zedd06". Check out PCA.org site.

Mechanically a well taken care of 993 should be bullet proof. Search for "Slippery Slope" for another view of expenses.

Scott-are you done yet?

I would budget for $500 - $20K/year. This would include maintenance and mod's but would exclude insurance and fuel - just my opinion based on some of the mod's being done by Members here!

I've owned my car for just over two years. Other than wear items, I've spent $53 on a new backup light switch. You have to watch out for valve guide wear and the clogged secondary air passage problem. Other than that, your mod budget will be much higher.

Check Robin's website good overview his TCO including some mods. http://www.p-car.com
Personally I budget ~ 2K a year for maintenance including tires/general wear items. Of course much depends on condition of car and how much work you do yourself. Personally, any used car you can be expected to put $2,000.00 to get up to your standards. Because of time restrictions recently, I had my slave cylinder and brakes bleed, major surprise it cost over $200.00. Do it yourself for about $15.

$20K a year??? Don't scare him off with this number or he's going to budget in a 996 cup car in four years.

If I didn't plan on tracking my car and adding a bunch of mods, I might have spent $1,200 for tires and oil changes in the past four years. If.

2. New mats $120 -ss
3. Stainless sills $65 -ss

5. Oil change done by Rick and me...$85 -req
6. Clear indicators cant remember exact but about $100 delivered - fitted by me -ss
7. Turbo Ducts, sprayed, about $350 - fitted by me -ss

10. New 18 wheels...$800 delivered -ss
11. New tires (Pirellis) for new wheels $940 deliver cant remember fitting cost -ss
12. New winter tires (Blizzaks) for 17 inch wheels - $650 -req
13. 90K mile service including all belts, fuel filter, SAI flush, distributor manifold for SAI (brass insert blown), plugs, plug leads etc, $2,000 -req
14. Cltch slave plus pipe (not fitted yet but soon) $100 -req
15. Spare DME (must have) plus window switches $100 -req
16. Aluminium dial rings $50 -ss
17. maxflow exhaust $800, fitted by me -SS

I cant remember any more but that makes a breakdown of

Slippery slope (you will get onto it eventually - $3,885
Required service stuff $5,785
Total spent in 1 year $9,670

Now I am not expecting this level in year two as I have done most of the expensive stuff and should be free of some of the major stuff this year touch wood.....but I would like to do a new turbo nose and new PSS9 suspension......please dont let my wife see this post!!!!

So that is a real spend on a 993 in its first year, others will have a lot less and some will have more, buts thats my two cents.

Oh! and dont forget Rennlist membership....best $32 you will ever spend!!!
