My experience is that if these cars are maintained properly, they don't cost any more than most alternatives to maintain. I have found this to be true with over 20+ 911s of various years (and two 914s, a 912 and 6 356s).

I'm a new owner.
I bought my 98 C2S with 8,500 miles on it about 2 months ago. I've put 1,500 miles on it and $10,000 into it so far (wheels, tires, suspension).
Oops, I just ordered a new 3-spoke steering wheel + air bag from Gert... so make that $11,300. Seats are next.
So far as maintenance... whatever it takes.
If I spend $2,000 year on maintenance I'd be content.

on the other hand, if you are comparing the 993 to say a lambo or an f-car, well then the pcar really is a bargain :-)

Trojanman -
I Shoulda been more specific...
Kinesis K18s - $3,000 (used, but perfect)
Michelin Pilot Sport 2s - $1,550
PSS9s, TRG Sways, RS Drop Links - $2,275 (group buy from ViperBob) + $500 install (West End Alignment)
OEM wide ovals - $600
Clear Bra -$750 (Mobile Aesthetics)
Key Conversion - 2 @ $85 = $170
Front Protection Bar - $200 (Gert)
New Split Grill (yet to be painted & installed, current split grill slightly warped) - $350 (Gert)
Sums to $9,395 + steering wheel & airbag (in transit from Belgium) $1,400 = $10,795
Whew... less than I thought. Got off on the cheap!

Couple more questions!
Lets say I take a 993 to my mechanic for inspection:
Is there anyway my mechanic can ascertain by lets say inspecting the valves themselves; a valve guide repair is needed? or am I asking way to much of him ?
Also is there a particular year within the 993 range that has a better track record than the others?
THANKS AGAIN!!! for your all your insights gentlemen!

I agree with ZombiePorsche -- since 7/05 purchase, I've only put ~$80 into flushing brake lines & clutch. No mods or heavy maintenance yet. Then again, I drive mine mostly on the weekends and in good weather.
I will be looking to do HDs & springs next year, after a season of getting used to the stock stuff at a few autocrosses & DE days. Until then, I live vicariously through the other RLers' mods...

Most mechanics can remove a valve cover and "feel" the play in valve stem. It will provide a rough idea of the wear. When I was budgeting for my car I figured valve work into the cost (worst case) Although my cel light was off I knew that I would be needing somethings LWF,Gaskets, plugs ect and when you are this far into the engine really not that much more to do the top-end.

Well so far my first 3 months have been worry and expense free. But based on all of my Rennlist research before the purchase I'm budgeting $2K a year. My advice, put it in a seperate checking account so your better half doesn't have to be bothered with the fact that an oil change might cost more than maintenance on her VW for a couple years. Just helps to keep the peace at home. If there is some left at the end of the year, role it over to the next budget year and do some mods.
