Reversing into the garage helps as well.

Chris Cervelli told me to only use Mobil 1 75w90 SHC in my gearbox because it needs a friction modifier.

I haven't been able to find any of that stuff anywhere. I can buy 75w90 all day long, but no one can get me the SHC.
Lufteknic certainly is a source for this. I've exchanged a few very informative emails with someone from Lufteknic regarding the gear lube question. I've asked his permission to post his email response. If he gives the go ahead - I'll post it here.

So for climates like NC, where it does get pretty cold in the winter, would the Mobilube 75-90SHC or the magic MTL-R be better? Lots of great recomendations but a lot were So CAL based. Thanks.

I ordered a gallon of the SHC earlier today. I'll report back once I've had a chance to install it and run it through the gears.

For you guys running the specialty formulation MTL-R (maybe Bobby only?)- do you have any updates? Its been 6 months since Robin gave great reviews on his 996. Does anyone else have experience?

I'm using Mobil 1 75w-90 GL-5 and no complaints, but I think shifting can be improved (2nd gear especially).

The specialty formulations website calls for this stuff on my 4x4 transfer case (which calls for GL-4).. I was thinking of trying it on my 4x4 and then using it on the 993 when its time to change next spring.

I added the MTLR to my 96 993 back in April and realized an immediate improvement in the 2nd gear cold shifting. No problems through the hot summer here in inland Poway. Think my car had Swepco from previous owner service.

Does Porsche allow/specify alternate weights of gear oil for different climates? The GL-5 rating is a must given the transaxle arrangement, but you might do OK with something like SF MTL-P (GL-5 rated, but a slightly lighter 75W85 weight). Wouldn't do any track days, but for a daily driver in cold weather it could work. Assuming Porsche allows it, of course.

Edit: Looking in the service manual and the owners manual, both say 75W90 gear oil without the usual table of temperatures. So I guess Porsche wants the same stuff in there from Alaska to Death Valley. If anyone has Porsche's extreme conditions recommendations, let me know.

I've got the MTL-R sitting in the garage waiting for the next change, so would also be interested if anyone else has tried this yet ...

It's been in mine all summer. I didn't notice much change, but at least the transmission has survived another hard season of being on the track.

Good to hear that the ones that tried it are happy. When you read the "bobistheoilguy.com" website, the guy who runs Specialty Formulations (SF) - one of the sponsors of BITOG seems to be very knowledgeable. In fact, the website with SF contributions, is probably the most comprehensive source for the consumers on lubrication and classifications etc.

The only thing that makes me nervous was that SF does not publish email, phone or street address on his website. I dont think this is the case, but there is a chance that he was a schmuck that was just repackaging 80w90 dino and calling it something else.

SF does not make rediculous claims of fuel economy etc that others like - Amsoil - make. Ive read every forum I can find on SF and others seem to be happy (non p-cars) with SF products.

With that said, I ordered the gear oil and willing to take the plunge. It will be interesting to note any differences to Mobil 1. If you look at the data sheets for both products, Mobil 1 and SF MTL-R, show very similar viscosities across the temp range as well as other material properties. FYI Royal Purple GL-4 and GL-5 dont even come close. Its visosity is much higher and may explain why some have had problems using Royal Purple in their trannies even though its rated as a 75W-90!

I got my car a couple of months ago w/ a little under 67k mi. It had the 60k service at apx. 64k mi. and I believe they used Mobil 1 gear oil in the gearbox, it did look fairly clean when I drained it too. Since I aquired the car, shifting from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 and to a lesser extent 3 to 4 has felt "notchy", I expect the syncros are worn but not bad enough to warrant replacing anytime soon.

As part of my self service program a couple of weeks ago I replaced the gear oil w/ the MTL-R gear oil, after driving the car for a couple hundred mi. the shifts are MUCH smoother now, both cold and warm. I would recommend this gear oil to anyone considering a change.
