Yeah, I knew as soon as I posted that I should have done the search first...
On the '88 I had to loosen the 2 hex bolts then unplug the 2 (connected) motors. I would suspect getting to the motors is a little harder on the 993.
I'll do the search.
Edit: OK, search led me to the p-car.com cab top DIY which answered my question.

You guys are all right! I took a look at the top lifting mechanics and I saw a hinge pin had backed out and was about to fall out of the assembly. I screwed it in and tightened it up and no more spring sounds or slamming top. After my last DE, I am going to pull the rollbar so I can get a closer look at all the hinge points as well as the adjusting nuts. Funny how a small item can have such a large impact on the top. If I own this car another 4 years, I will have everything figured out.
