Default Jacking under the engine

Sorry, that title didn't doesn't sound too good

I'm thinking of doing a DIY muffler change. Once the car is raised using a trolley jack under the engine. Where do you put the axle stands to keep it there assuming I don't trust my trolley jack with my life?

Also there seems to be some concern about jacking the car under the engine. After the sound tray is removed has anyone got an exact picture of where to put the trolley jack?

Thanks.

Just follow these instructions and you'll be fine:

Sorry about that, I looked at a different jacking link on p-car that had a gadget for making it easier. I completely missed this one...thanks.

Doogle,

You may also want to put a rubber pad (some use a hockey puck) on the jack. That'll give it a little more grip, rather than metal sliding against metal.

When you are taking the exhausts out, you may want to remove the wheels, it just gives you more area to work on. That might be obvious, but the first time I did it, I left the wheels on and it was a pain!

Also make sure and wear some eye protection, a lot of junk is going to fall on you as a lot of dirt, rocks etc. gathers on in that area.

Have fun!

I've had bad luck with pucks under the engine. The engine
case edge was sharp enough to cut through the puck with
attention getting results.

a block of hard wood, like Oak will work as well.

Joe is correct - a 3/4" thick x 4" x 4" piece of oak will give you the thickness to prevent any damage to the engine case and prevent slippage.

I am not a fan of the hockey puck, unless used on the 993's side lift points in front of the rear wheels. They work well there.

Hmmm, just curious, Mike. What's your opposition to the hockey puck at the engine case? It's hard enough to keep its shape, and by nature non-slip and non-marring. Am I missing something?

Besides this linked web page, can someone point me to an official source that says this:

"Porsche recommends lifting the rear of the vehicle using the engine as a lift point"

Can someone refer to the owners manual for the recommendation?

While most convenient, I have my doubts this is the best place to lift the car. Hey, let's put a 2000 lb. load on the crankcase.

Hey, do whatever you feel comfortable with. This has been a MUCH discussed topic on Rennlist in the past. Read the threads and then do what you think is best for your car.

It definitely does a number on the hydraulic engine mounts.

Problem is I've only got one trolley jack and if I don't jack it under the engine, it's going to be interesting trying to make (safe) use of the jack and the axle stands.
I was thinking of using the hockey puck and a block of wood, just to keep everyone happy

Without using the engine lift method, I don't see how to get the car up on four stands. Porsche took away our outriggers.

Hi Doogle,

In your avatar, is your car sitting at the entrance to Northway Porsche. Just interested because that's where I got both my 993s from.

I think I'll just take the chance and lift it via the engine.

Steve - Yes it is Northway. I bought it from a guy who had it on 'sale or return'. I used to get my C4 serviced there..what Ray doesn't know about 993's isn't worth knowing.
I feel a bit guilty now though as I get mt TT serviced at Porsche as I want to keep the FPSH going. But it does need new heat shields so I'll get them done at Northways, just to keep him happy. (plus he's half the price )
