CEL Question -- Generic (Audi A6 - 4.2L)
Guys
I know this is slightly OT but you guys are a fountain of knowledge
Would the CEL light JUST come on when the car is due a service or does it indicate that their is a REAL malfunction

I don't think CEL comes on for routine maintenance. Buy a cheap OBDII (I assume post 1995) reader from Kragen, Pep Boys someplace like that and read the codes. Those places will also read the codes for youf or free usually.

Former A6 owner here... You should be able to go to a shop that would read the codes. There was one that appeared on mine that was some componant in the warm up cycle that caused it. They read it out and reset it...no charge. It never reapeared.
Audiworld is as close to Rennlist as I have seen and has pretty good technical info. They should be able to get you to somebody with a readerreset tool. The A6 doesn't have the same dreaded CEL issue we have.

I've got an S4 V8, from personal experience the only thing that happens as you near the required service is that the info center gives you a daily countdown. I took mine down to 0 just to see what would happen. Nothing
They do tend to thow a CEL in really cold weather on occasion, but it is just a transient and will soon go out.

I've been looking on ebay and the VAG COM tool seems to be only $30 or so -- MAybe a wise investment ??

My 2000 S4 did this recently on cold morning.
I Called a buddy who is Audi Service and he said the O2 sensor feedback loop is very sensitive.
I pulled the codes and it read Bank 1 Sensor 1 Internal resistance too high...... Meaning a bad O2 sensor.
He advised me to pull the battery ground and reset the computer.
That was about a month ago and haven't had an issue yet.
I Called a buddy who is Audi Service and he said the O2 sensor feedback loop is very sensitive.
I pulled the codes and it read Bank 1 Sensor 1 Internal resistance too high...... Meaning a bad O2 sensor.
He advised me to pull the battery ground and reset the computer.
That was about a month ago and haven't had an issue yet.

Do you just disconnect / reconnect the battery to reset the computer ??
It can't be that easy ?

It will take several run cycles for it to return..... If it does.
If it does return, then pull the codes and take action from there.

Under OBDII, the Audi's CEL can be caused by something as simple as the service station forgetting to tighten the gas cap correctly... since I live in Oregon (no self-serve gas), I know this from experience. If it comes back, then you know CEL is not due to the gas cap! Code reader or dealer at that point.
