There really isn't a downside as the lowering costs of quality aftermarket HID kits makes it an obvious upgrade from stock. I've got the Katz HID's and have had no problems with the system. The original Bosch Litronic 993 system can still be had for around $900. per side.

There is no downside to 993 projector lights.
The only downside is those "wannbees" who drive around all day with their stupid after market kits on-saying LOOK AT ME.
Those lights are not focused & can not handle the extra long length of the HID bulb.
Purely stupid in my book
