Default Pictoral CDR 220 install into 993

The stock Becker CDR 210 in Ginger was functional, but I hated the rocker switches. I found a clean CDR 220 out of a 996/Boxster and proceded.

The 210 without faceplate:

I made a couple of removal keys. I won't advocate this cuz you could damage the unit. When the tabs disengage, push the unit from the back:

Disconnect the 3 harness plugs and antenna. I saw a real opportunity to scar the kneepad/dash so I used masking tape on the area around the radio for protection:

For the 220 to fit, you must remove the cage that the 210 sat in. There are 8 tabs (there are 2 different types of tabs) that hold the cage in. Bend them out of the way:

There is a green wire connected to the cage that I read is for alarm and not required for the 220. I just disconnected it:

Gathered the connections to plug into the 220:

Sliding the 220 in is a real challenge. It's very difficult to get the wires out of the way and get the back of the unit to seat correctly in the guides. It took 3 attempts for me:

Success! Waiting for the faceplate update from Becker and it's complete:

You're welcome!

Just went for a drive and found two things. First, The fidelity of the 220 is much better than the 210. The sound is more crisp and volume can go higher without distortion.

Second, my cd changer no longer works. I'm hoping the plug on the back of the unit just wasn't seated properly.

Mark...GREAT write up and photos. Folks will pull this out for many years to come when searching for CDR-220 install advise.

Regarding the CD player. If you have a CDC-1 deck I don't believe that the CDR-220 will operate it. The CDR-220 uses a CDC-3 to work.

If you have a CDC 3, before you pull the unit out again, press and hold the "TP" button for ten seconds until the radio display reads "Becker 1". Turn the tuning **** until "AUX ON", or "AUX OFF" is displayed. If it reads on change it to off. If the PO was using an iPod he would have had the AUX on which would cause your CD deck not to work. Hope this is the problem as it would be an easy fix.

Chuck,
Thanks - I hope this helps answer questions for others.

And thanks for the tip! I'll try it this evening. Not sure if it's a cdc 1 or 3. I searched for more info on that and couldn't find anything concrete.

Marc, It had to be a CDC 3 if it worked with the CDR-210. The CDC-1 worked with the Alpine based CDR 1 that was standard isue wih the MY95.

BTW, extra CDC 3 cassettes were going on ebay for $10

The changer is a Sony cdx 715 - don't know which one that makes it.

I tied toggling AUX on and back off - no love. Ran out of light tonight. I'll have to play with it this week.

Mark...I would contact Becker of North America at (888) 423-3537 or by email at info@harmanbecker.us. It seems if the CDR-210 operated it the CDR-220 would too. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I posted about the changer not working on the Becker board. Here is the response:

"Only very early generation 210's worked with the Sony...this was quickly corrected. 95% of 210 wont work with it and no 220s will."

Guess I'm looking for a new changer....

Learn something new every day on this board. Thanks, Mark.
The CDC3 s can be had for reasonable money but for a little more I might go for one of the MP3 players like Phatbox or Ipod.

David in LA has the Phatbox which I like a lot.

For reference, in September, 2004 I bought a CDC-3 Changer and cable from Becker for $276.13

This is a very great help. I'm in the process of procuriing a CDR-220 as my CDR-210 is not working. I keep reading that there is some adjustment in order to fit the 993. Is it just the switching of the display contrast only or something else?

Mark,

A couple of questions- since you removed the CDR-210 cage, does the 220 go in without a cage? If so, what holds the unit in place?

Thanks for the pics, I am getting ready to do this myself.

EB,
There are some tensioned tabs that the back of the head unit slides in to. They are difficult to see and I couldn't get a good picture of them. The tabs hold the unit very well.

Just want to add, the stock faceplate display does not show at all during the daylight in the 993. You'll almost certainly have to get the updated faceplate from Becker. I've read on other threads that the viewing angle is different on the 993 from the 996/Boxster. I now believe that to be false. I believe Becker turns up the contrast for the modified version. The good thing is, you can order the 993 faceplate before you do the install. Becker NA will charge your CC $150 but will credit $100 back to you when you return the original.
