Default Dropping Engine...what should be done??

Finally dropping the engine in my '97 993 Cab to do a clutch. What recomendations are out there for other things that I should do while I have the engine down.

Any suggestions or input is much appreciated.

Jim,

I posted the notes I have in my 993 Maintenance Library for the time when the engine is out. You can sort through what you want to do - my list is pretty broad. Hope this helps and at least gives you a starting punchlist.

Engine “Out” and LWF Conversion Notes:

- Possibly change out the clutch to new with LWF.

- Steve Weiner wrote on 4/13/05 the following comments about the conversion from the stock 993 clutch to the ‘RS” kit:

The RS kit is comprised of:
RS flywheel
RS Pressure Plate
RS disc
Release bearing
Pilot bearing
RS guide tube
RS ring gear
All new flywheel and PP bolts

If you are starting from scratch you would want to replace the following parts:
964-102-239-31 (1) LWF Flywheel
964-114-143-31 (1) Ring Gear
931-102-111-00 (1) Pilot Bearing
928-102-151-01 (9) Flywheel Bolt
950-116-813-30 (1) Guide Tube
964-116-011-61 (1) Clutch Disc
N-014-715-3 (9) Cheese Head Screw M8 x 45
944-116-080-01 (1) Release Bearing
964-116-028-90 (1) Pressure Plate
999-113-426-41 (1) Rear Main Seal (RMS)
950-116-710-04 (1) Operating Shaft

When clutch is done and engine is out replace:
Plug wires
Spark plugs
Clutch slave cylinder
Power steering pump
Alternator
Power steering belt
New distributors.
Replace or clean ISV. New hoses and clamps.
Oil pressure sender
Temperature sensor
Breather cover and hose
Timing chain guides and tensioners
‘O’ Ring under engine breather
Clutch fork release assy
Clutch fork needle bearings
Rear main engine seal
RS transmission mounts
Valve cover gaskets
Valve covers
All O2 sensors
All belts
All hoses
All filters
All seals and gaskets
Replace check valve related to the carbon buildup problem. Highlighted part
number 5 with a Porsche part number of 993-113-250-03. Cleaning secondary air injection ports and changing SAI check valve. http://pcar.com/diy/sai/1/sai.htm

That pressure plate is the regular stock 964 pressure plate and if you have the choice should not be used on the higher HP 993. The current application list for PP's:

You should know better than to ask a question like that!!! Rennlisters would also have you do a valve job, SAI ports and heck might as well doa full rebuild!!

When I did my clutch job over Christmas I bought the Clutch Super Kit from Pelican Parts. It had all the bits I needed. In addition I replace my DMF with a new one and I also replaced the power steering pump belt, the fuel filter, all the spark plugs (easy to do!!!) and the fuel filter. I also had to replace a few rusted bots here and there. That cost me 2K. If you do a LWF it will run you a bit less.

Hope you have some time on your hands. This job took me 11 days or so. I admit I did take my time and cleaned a lot of things. This job is not hard its just time consuming because on the 993 there is so much "stuff" to remove before you drop the engine. I dropped the engine in my old 83 SC in about 5 hours. It took about 11 to drop this one!! Be sure to take LOTS of digital photos before you begin to take things apart. Also I removed the rear bumper,(3 hours) it made dropping the engine much easier.

I also used the time the engine was out to remove the insulation under the rear deck, clean the engine compartment, and get all the cosmoline off the engine & suspension parts.

Oh! Ok I tested it before and I tough it was working.
