Default SAI - Porsche stance on issue

I have tried looking through the search function but there is so much on this that my eyes were getting v tired .....so question

What is Porsches stance on the SAI issue that seems to eventually affect every 993.....is there a chance that with concerted effort they would cave and pay up part of the cost associated with rectifying the issue???

Now I will sit back and wait for the abuse..........

My 97 got a warranty top end with new P/C's in 2001 @ 35K miles due to CEL and oil use. That alone doesn't prove anything, but if enough people can document the problem/solution, there may be a case.

David,

if you have documented SAI issue, then it is an emission issue, which is covered by 8yr Emission warranty.
In my experience PCNA won't listen to you if independent shop does SAI-related investigation and work. You have to go to Porsche dealer with this. If you do, then there is a chance that SAI work will be covered by PCNA.

I was under the impression that if a car had a problem with anything pollution control related, it was covered by a Federally Mandated 10 year warranty. If so, how is Porsche skirting the CEL/SAI issue?

SAI = Secondary Air Injection

Basically, ODBII requires passages to allow air to be blown into the exhaust ports on startup to help cut down emissions. They get clogged up with carbon deposits trigering a Check Engine Light. If totally blocked, you most do a $5K head job to get them cleaned. There are other less expensive alternatives to get them cleaned if not totally blocked. It just affects emissions and ability to pass SMOG test every year.

Do a search...you'll learn more than you really want to know about this. It is the Achilles heal of the 993's.

Maybe they've not been sued enough to be convinced it is a defect. Then on the other hand maybe it's not a defect and not covered by any federal mandate.

The guys that designed the system should be fired.

Wonder if Lexus would tell they're customers that it's thier own problem.

Heard that some BMW and Mercedes had the same issue. Curious to know how those manufacturers dealt with it- anyone know??

Porsche is almost in the clear here as the 8 year warranty would be measured from the original in-service date. For my '97 that was late '96. Even for an early '98 in-service, time is just about up. Unless you have on-going documentation from a dealer that started in the 8 year window, Porsche is not going to even consider it. JMHO...

"Basically, ODBII requires passages to allow air to be blown into the exhaust ports on startup to help cut down emissions."

Right on! And because:

1. a cold startup results in a richer mixture, increasing emissions
2. the emission system is open-loop for short time after a cold startup

Check here ( www.systemsc.com/pictures.htm ) for additional info.
