I'm presently knee-deep in snow and will be for the next 4 months. These cars are very rare where I live, so finding an opportunity to test-drive one for an afternoon before I buy is going to be tough. So I figure the next best thing is to talk to people with actual experience in both cars... and ask all my silly questions.

I have a question for you...what's holding you back?

Spending $50K+ CDN on a 10 year-old car I've never driven is a little intimidating and I've already got a decent car (but it's not my dream). From my research, and my time on Rennlist, I'm pretty sure 993 is the way I want to go though. I'm just talking it out with people who've driven both cars to make sure it's what I want.

Default smile?.....evry time I look at her!

I know everybody else here has said almost all there is to say on the subject but repetition never hurts .......for me the 993 was a realization of a 25 year 911 dream. I have owned several fast sports and saloon cars including various water cooled p-cars (mainly turbos) but had always wanted a 911 and as soon as the 993 was shown in the mid 90's I was sold....but could not afford. I hate most japanese cars with a few exceptions ...Toyota Supra Turbo, gray market Skyline (performance not looks), the Infinity G35 and then the 350Z which a friend at work owned...so I had chance to drive.....all of the cars I have owned I have liked and enjoyed but the 993 IS DIFFERENT .....its timeless, fun to drive, sounds and looks great from any angle, fun to work on, a money drain , there is no other car I have owned can touch her in all this departments.........but the thing that makes me know just how much this is true love.....I smile every time I see her and enjoy every minute I spend in her, the mecahnical engine sounds (I have the LFW so that adds some extra) and the gruff exhaust note (I have maxflos) together with the pure thrill of taking a corner fast (but on a closed course or course hahaha) just all come together to make this car the living of a pornographic dream......ONLY EVEN BETTER ......Yes the 350Z is a nice car, interesting to look at, crappy build though and yes it goes well, but my guess is that it will be like a tart/ho/prostitue , fun for a while but thats all, the 993 as many on this board will attest is an enjoyable long term commitment, for the first time ever I am thinking of keeping a car for many many years................by the way I love my wife dearly also....she is an even longer term commitment and much more expensive!!!! OK nuff said!

Where in Canada are you located. If you're within driving distance of Great Falls feel free to come on down and take my car for a spin.

I was trying to put the experience in words for some non p-car people the other day that don't really understand the obsession with the little blue car in the garage. I think you nailed it here. Car ****.

Default Drive one if at all possible

Last spring I drove everything before settling on my 993... Tastes vary and you simply cannot tell what a car will be like from reading about it or even sitting in it. For example, I really liked the 350z but felt it was not up to german standards on interior...so I drove a G35 Coupe hoping for a better experience. I *hated* the G35 Coupe. It did not feel nearly as tight as a 350z, even steering and gearbox felt worse and as far as I can tell, they should be identical.

After driving everything, my finalists were the 350z and the Audi S4. The S4 was clearly a nicer car, but approximately twice as expensive...when I found myself considering it despite the price, I thought "Why not go out and get my real love?" and bought the 993 of my dreams instead. The 350z was clearly the least expensive of the three, had a nice solid feel, lovely exterior, weak interior, etc. all the things others have said, but a couple of things nobody else seems to have noted: 1) steering in the 993 is worlds better...perhaps the single most amazing thing to me even today and 2) Rear and side visibility is worlds better in a 993.

one has to drive a 993 to feel the difference. There are modern cars out there which are faster and handle better, more compliant etc but its the mixed feelings of frustration (when sth goes wrong, eg steering rack, valve cover leaks, irratic idling, SAI checklight, DME starter failure, squeaky windscreen, fan bearing failure, failed LSD, worn lower A-arms bushings, engine oil leaks for some, I sure there are more to come) and passion (the exhaust sound, the old school sports car feel without any advanced traction control, the direct steering feel, the big *** look, the vdo gauges, notchy gear shift, the history) and the challenge to drive it fast in the curves, which make a 993 so special. i sold the modern e46 M3 for a 993 and had no regrets. Having said that, the new porsches are different, they are more user friendly. I have got bored with my other 987 boxster only after 4 months of ownership and am selling it. The 993 is a keeper.....and the thrill is still there after owning it for over 2 years

hope i have added sth other rennlisters may have missed

I'm in Winnipeg... about 700 miles away. But thank you for the offer though.

Nissan is a nice car, I do have a Titan to tow my 993. The 350z is well set up, but a track version with suspension runs even with my Boxster S on tracks like VIR. The 993 set up well walks away hands down in all categories as far as track performance. Timeless looks..........

I drove the 993 today to blow some dust off. After an hour of driving, I brought it back and my hands were shaking.

The car is phenomenal and excites all the senses. I love it.

It's really interesting to read this thread, and see what others have gone through before arriving at the decision to get a 993.

In 1997 I worked at an Audi/VW/Porsche dealership and it was there I first started to learn about the 911. There was a 993 on the showroom floor and I admired it and sat in it many times, but didn't spend any time thinking about owning one because it was over 80K -- something for millionaires, but not for the likes of me.

Fast-forward 8 years and I have a good career, own real estate, and after playing a racing game on the XBOX I started thinking about Porsche again for the first time in 8 years. I started researching online and discovered that we had enough cash to buy a 993! I went through the motions of studying other cars like the 350Z, but in my heart had already decided I would buy a 993 before ever driving one. And I never did drive any other "competitor".
