First get new friends...then a new car

Just kidding...you can't compare a Porsche with a mass production Japanese car...it's pointless...a Porsche has a unique soul and you should buy it because you can't fight the attraction...good luck...

I sold my 350Z after about a year, and was relieved to do so. It makes a lousy daily driver, even after adding Koni adjustable shocks. It is a real "looker", though; I'll give you that, and it has great acceleration. For autocross it has massive understeer. It is really a muscle car rather than a sports car. The tires develop scallops that cause the tires to "roar", and Nissan doesn't have a fix. Check out my350Z.com's forums. Oh, and the seats hurt, too.

I'm new to the 993, so I'm no authority on its virtues, but clearly it is also a "looker" and a sports car. During the test drive both I and my grown son came out smiling ear-to-ear.

Your friends are wrong.

I would adjust that to read "can't compare an OLD Porsche with a mass production Japanese..."

Well, you said that you were "prepped" for the bias, and I think you got it

I love Japanese cars. They are appliance-reliable, and the performance some are capable of is genuinely exciting. But were anyone buying on pure performance numbers alone, you'd be trading up every year. To me, that's not what owning a sports car is all about. It's the whole experience: performance, beauty, sound, and most of all how it makes you feel. That latter point is what makes people fall in love with older Porsches, Alfas, even Miatas. Its attributes in sum, there really is no substitute for a 911 ...just pick your year. And if you don't feel this way, then you really don't need to be driving one. But if a 993 really does stir your soul, who cares what anybody says, friends or not.

I would try to get as much seat time as you can in a 993. See if it lights your fire. They are good cars, but as the 1995 Porsche ad said, "Porsche doesn't build cars to be something for everyone, but everything to someone."

Only you can determine if you are that someone.

That said, only you can prevent forrest fires, but don't ever extinguish the fire in your heart!

"I like the 350Z... but LOVE the 993."

Sounds like you've made your decision. Go with your heart!

I don't care for the looks of the 350, the front end, especially.

I've had my 993 for less than a year . . . and feel I couldn't have made a better decision.

I have owned BMWs, 3 other Porsches (924,944,911), many Muscle Cars (Camaro, Mustang, etc) and have driven hopped up 240zs and 510s. A good friend drives a new 350z and I almost bought one. I really like the new Z car. But when I drove the 993 I had feeling unlike any other. Even after nearly 5 months EVERY time I drive my car I smile. Its a very unique car. It creates an emotional response that is hard to describe.

There is something about the way it smells (yes smells), the way it sounds both at idle and as you accelerate. That unique flat six sound. The confidence you feel as you sweep into a curve. The powerful brakes. The classic flat instrument gauge with a huge tach right were it should be (in the middle). The quirky left handed ignition. The excellent visibility. Those silly little seats behind you. That classic organic shape. A shape that forces you to "check on it" in the garage before you go to bed or give it one more glance as you leave the parking lot.

The car is expensive. Expensive new, expensive used, expensive to insure, expensive to mod and expensive to maintain. Overall very reliable but it has its warts.

Drive it at your peril. For once under its spell you are lost..................
