I am in the same decision-making process right now with my spare G64 gearbox. I think, I am in fact contemplating selling it and moving to a reinforced Carrera 5 speed gearbox instead, to have taller gears and fitting in it my Guard LSD, but it is a tough choice to make.
I never see adding weight as beneficial, any understeer problems will be cured with suspension/tire choices and setups, as you know it is mass transfer, much more than weight bias, that will make a difference in car handling. I switched to 2WD and never regretted it, but these are very personl choices.
Good luck.

Here are four pics that show the front trans mount, the VC assy., and two of the nose detail which is actually missing the adapter that mounts to the torque tube. These are from a G64 gbx.
I have many more of the internals if your interested. No sweat.

sorry to jump in, but been planning next project and 964 turbo look. I have just started reading all the threads here and now have more questions. It seems without doubt that 6 speek 993 tranny, or 993 tip would fit into 964. I think I read some where someone said wish I could put a 996 tip in and get 5 speed auto? Will it fit? I know the bolt pattern engine to tranny is not the same, but has it been done? Would it make sense? thanks Jim
