I think M coupe would be a compelling track car. Either that or the boxster s. The M coupe is pretty ugly but fast and well balanced. I woudl think, not verified as I am not in the market, that price would be reasonable given that it is the M3's ugly stepsister. Boxster s is cheap because they made and sold so many of them. M3 is nice but I think there is better value out there.
Limited production models will hold their values better. I'd go with an M3 coupe or in my case would even consider a 2002 or 2003 M5. The prices have come down with the introduction of the new M5 and 400 HP in a 3800 lb sedan ain't half bad. May not be as competent on the track as the lighter M3 but it would be more comfortable for street driving.
2002 M FIVE!!! Great all around car, much rarer than the M3, more panache appeal, still a great one for the track, unbelievable HP, more amazing looking than even an M3. It's alot of car for $45k.

I don't get it. Why buy a $40-50K car that you have a good chance of stuffing into a wall at a DE with no insurance? There are plenty of $20K and less cars for that. If not a Z coupe, an E36 M3 comes to mind immediately.
No, I don;t think it's all about horsepower. I race a Miata
If you are talking about DE, I would say a much cheaper car than your $45-$50 K price...unless you are really good out there, having a bunch of HP isn't going to be as fun as a cheaper car that you can learn on and move up from there....that said, I'm selling my 968 coupe with LSD
I love my M3 and would recommend it as a daily driver, but for DE, you aren't going to be happy with it coming from a 911. I can almost guarantee you that. It's a VERY heavy car. If you are looking for a higher HP car I would second what someone above said and go for the 3.0 BMW coupe...it'll be a much lower cost of entry than the M.
I can't stress enough that a faster car won't mean more fun or quicker times necessarily--I think you would have more fun in something less expensive [if nothing else for the fact you can crack it up and not hate yourself for destroying a really expensive car] and then moving up...parts would be cheaper, consumeables, etc....
As many say, "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow"
