Just blew a tire! Does AWD require 4 new?
I just had a nice ride home in a flat bed tow truck after my right rear tire blew on the freeway. The wheel looks okay, but I plan to have it checked for any damage. What I'm wondering is about tire replacement on an all wheel drive model. The tires have about 15,000 miles on them. Is it safe and/or advisable to replace just the blown tire, or do I need four new tires at about $300 each?
Thanks in advance,
Matt B.

Matt..
You got 15k out of your rear tires ?? What type of tire ?? I can't get the rears to last more than 8-10k max on mine.
As others have said, replace both in the back. Tread depth differences left/right could affect traction and handling characteristics.

Thanks for the responses. They are Bridgestone S-02s, front and rear. They actually still look decent. Maybe, I'm not driving her aggressively enough. I do alot of highway driving and only let it out once in a while on a winding road or an on/off ramp.

I'm in the same situation with worn rear tires on my C4. But I was told that even the difference of a few 32nds between front and rear can affect the AWD....because the difference in rotation/mile. Is that correct? Would love to replace just 2 tires, because I get as few as 5K miles before the rear tires are shot....but the fronts have a lot left.
