Door Swings Freely - Is This Normal?
Not sure if this is normal 993 door swing behavior, but wanted to get some input.
When I open my doors, they swing out to the detent position and stop. However, the door will still swing freely back to the closed position. If I push it past the detent, it will then freely swing completely open and freely back to the first detent. Most cars hold the door in the detent position.
I've done my searches and most relate the a popping sound from the check strap. I don't have any popping or clicking sounds, but the passenger door does squeak like an old piece of wood when nearing its fully opened position.
Is this how 993 doors were designed to swing - open to the detent but not hold?

Burning Brakes
The doors swing pretty freely on my 993, unlike my old merc where the doors stop at points on the check strap. Make sure your check strap is in tact, they are prone to breaking free from the bodywork and sometimes need to be welded back in place, mine has done this.

On a similar note, on both the 993s I've had the doors seem to swing a lot more freely than they do on other cars. Is this normal? Unlike my other cars I need to be very careful not to let go of the door if I'm opening it in a confined space.

Thanks Chris, that DYI was one of the first things I referenced. That moron did a good job, though.
The action on my doors work pretty well - the detent does it's job & smoothly and the check strap is firmly attached. But after reading the DYI & seeing how the door never really holds at the detent I thought I might need a fix.
Sounds like mine is working as designed.
