Could you explain more as to why you failed? Was your car good and hot prior to testing? Was it a readiness code violation?

Not to hijack this thread but I got a CA smog check at a "test only" facility because they said the car is more likely to pollute than other cars - how do they know that? What should I do right before I go to the test facility? I am having the 30K service done first which should help, right? Thanks for the input.

Default 993 Smog Paradise!!

This is Elvis on another account....the wonders of technology!!
I posted the thread about 95 993 cab smog failures. I have read alot of info about the SAI, ODB-II troubles and believe that my cat may be shot...

I ran the car like a stallion for a half hour before takin her in, so the cat was up to temp, the tech got on it right away and I still failed HC levels at 2571 rpm
reading was 167 out of a max of 130. I passed on idle levels??

I also failed CO levels...1.79 out of a max of 1.00...but passed with flying colors at idle (.02)
I'm am F/A-18 guy, not very fimilar with emissions for autos...

I had an appointment at Callas Rennsport in Torrance on Friday..but he has short staff on Friday and had to cancel....

Any help would be appriecated...I'm just afraid that a dealership will see me coming and make sure they are stocked up on lube!!!

Do you have any CEL light problems? Do you know if your CEL light even works? I would think if your cat is shot, you would be tripping error codes.

Does the CEL light illuminate when you first start your car?

Hi Peter,

Long time no see! How are you? Anyway, when you are getting the 30k service done, ask them if they need to disconnect the battery. If so, then you will need to have the ready codes reset properly or else your car will not pass. Take care, Peter.

Default CA Smog Paradise!!

I will check my CEL tomorrow at start up and see if it illuminates....
I hope you are right about the cat condition..I can't even locate one, anyway, I,d rather put the dough into upgrades..PS9's or something I would get more excitement from than a converter!!!
Anyone know of an LA area shop that I could get into for diagnosis on short notice???? Thanks for the posts guys.....

Try Dave at TRE in North Hollywood. A no BS guy; no need for KY or Astroglide when dealing with him and based on your location in your first post he is "close" to you, at least way closer than Torrence.

If your CEL doesn not light up also make sure that it has not been disconnected as there are some less than scrupulous sellers out there. A properly running 993 should run very clean assuming the cat is working...when mine was tested the operator said my emmisions were cleaner than many Hondas and Toyotas that came in. You may also want to make sure that a previous owner did not gut the cat in an attempt to find cheap horsepower. Good luck!

Isn't a 95' an OBD 1 and not OBD 2? Readiness codes not an issue I think??

Same here: my tailpipe emissions are in ULEV territory.

my car failed (i am in san jose) for obd not ready...so, the tech told me to run through these driving cycles to reset the engine codes..i did this, but not sure if i did it right..anyway, i got one of those hand held scanners thats supposed to test for readiness..it says everything is fine..does that mean i did the driving cycles correctly? or does it mean that the scanner i have doesnt check the same thing at the smog station?

thanks
