My C4 is my second 993, and I have always thought it sat lower than my C2 Targa. For another reason, I was checking which options were included when the car was new, and one of the option codes means "Lowered Vehicle".
Does anyone know if this would have been something specified by the original purchaser, or are all C4s lowered?
The other reason I was looking at the codes was that I have been considering going for the improved induction (as per the motorsport airbox option) and on a website offering it for sale, I noticed the intake had a chrome rim. My last car didn't have the chrome rim, whereas my C4 does, and I wondered whether this car already had it (i.e. whether the chrome rim denotes a motorsport airbox). Does anyone know?

Yes, the chrome ring is part of the Motorsound package. There's also a series of holes drilled toward the back of the airbox lid to let more sound out. You should be able to see them by shining a flashlight back there.
Not sure about the "lowered vehicle" - maybe the Euro Sport suspension? What's the code?

My '96 C4(also 6-speed coupe) wasn't lowered until I lowered it last year; I believe all cars shipped to the US have to meet US DOT height/crash requirements.

The code is 033 (on the P-Car website this is shown as "Lowered Vehicle").
In terms of the Motorsound option, is this what is shown as code 159 "Engine Sound Package"? If so, then it wasn't fitted when the car was built, but I guess someone may have upgraded.
Also, does anyone know what code 233 is - it's not shown in the P-Car list.
Eric, returning to our posts of last week, if as you suggest I do have the Motorsound airbox, and if as some respondants said, the Varioram roar would be more noticeable with non-standard induction, maybe my Varioram's not working properly afterall? ;o)

"All the US specification 993s came with 2 different suspension options. The standard M032 setup and the optional M030 sport chassis. You will have to look at your car's option sticker to see if it came with the sports chassis M030. The M030 option was only offered on the Coupe models including the Carrera S and Carrera 4S. The 993 Turbo already had the M030 sport chassis with the exception of a slightly firmer rear spring to compensate for the heavier rear weight. The M030 sport chassis option included firmer shocks and springs and slightly thicker anti-roll bars. There were some slight anti-roll bar differences between narrow and wide body cars as well. The ride height of all US 993 cars were the same regardless of suspension setup. The US cars were approximately 20 mm higher in front and 10 mm higher at rear than the standard ROW (rest of world) cars. On the other hand, all US cars were approximately 30 mm higher all around than the ROW M030 equipped cars. "
Here is my US C4S before (stock US) and after Bilsteins with H&R springs lowered a little under ROW for comparison.

Code 033 is M033 which is lowered but not as firm as the sport (m030) suspension. I can't find code 233 on my PET CD for USA or RoW - sorry.
On the Motorsound, that is code 159 and also came with different mufflers. Here's the part numbers from max911 in a previous post. These numbers are visible by looking under the car.
standard mufflers (left)
993 111 045 04 Bischoff
993 111 045 11 Gillet
motorsound mufflers (left)
993 111 045 07 Bischoff
993 111 045 12 Gillet
for right side part numbers, substitute "046" in place of 045.
What I've found with the VarioRam sound is that it's most noticable at about 5100-5200 rpm in 3rd gear with the gas floored. My C4S gets a deeper, throatier growl at this point. If you slowly rev up through 5100-5200 rpm, it's not nearly as noticable, probably because the throttle is not wide open.
If you've confirmed that your VR flaps actuate properly (key on prior to start), no vacuum leaks, and that vacuum distributor is not collapsed, you should be able to hear some difference.

Code 233 means Pirelli tyres (I found another website with an option decoder http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp).
Having driven the car a lot more over the past week than I usually do (because I have been on vacation), I'm now convinced adding the brass tube to the vacuum distribution piece has made an appreciable difference to the car's performance. It would be nice to know what the various pipes connect to, so that the improvement could be explained.
BTW - it is the fact that I have been on vacation and have been using the car more which has caused my recent flurry of activity on the forum - back to work tomorrow, so I'll be less of a nuisance from now on. ;o)

Mine is a C2.
M030 was the "sports" lowered chasis (firmer ride) and the M033 was a lowered chasis (same stiffness as stock, just lower).
It's a nice option, watch the front and back if driving over curbs. And if you decide to change the shocks, as I did for Bilstien HD's, make sure that the can accomodate the lower M033 springs. I bought my HD's from Gert, with extra thread and kept the M033 springs.

I HIGHLY recc the front protection bar from Gert.. I've only had my car lowered for about 2 weeks and I've "used" it several times already.. Lots of v-shaped drive way entrances where I live. You can barely see it after it is installed.

Hi Steve,
We do save a few quid on clear/red indicators and we get that dull metal insert in the gear lever! If you look through the recent posts we do get some kind of LSD and I think they all have that ABD thing that uses the brakes to stop slippage at low speeds.
