Default CDR 220 and IPOD interface question to those that have it

Considering going this route.

When in Aux. mode to operate the Ipod, do you get the ability to skip through playlists with the "disc select" button and through tracks on each playlist the same way you would go through tracks on a cd?

This is important b/c I am thinking about leaving the ipod in the glove box.

Also, is it standard or possible at all to charge the Ipod from the connection to this radio.

Thanks,
Josh

Your not going to be able to control the IPOD with the CDR220. All of your music selection wil have to be done on the IPOD.

Ditto with what Don said... all control is done with the ipod.

First of all, you CAN control the iPod from the CDR220, it is just a terrible way to do it. I tried it for a few days, and I didn't like it.

To connect the iPod to the CDR220, all you need is the connector that plugs in where the 6-Disc changer goes. It is available from Dension USA (They also have a nice cradle and mount for iPods) and probably other places as well. The Dension connector is easy to use, and the cradle provides power to the iPod too.

See the other post going today to see a pic of my install.

I have a CDR-220 in my 968, but I have a Creative Micro Zen. Is there a way to incorporate that mp3 player into my head unit, or do i have to have an ipod?

You'd need the plug that terminates in RCA Jacks, and could then use a mini-plug adapter to go from the Zen to the CRD-220. Advantage there is that you could then use ANY player for input. You'd still have to arrange power if long-term use (In excess of the battery life) is desired.

I am only aware of a couple of head units (Alpine 9855 and 9853 and Clarion VRX755) that have an ipod interface that allows full control of the ipod options. IMO, these head units are far too blingy for my car. Is anyone aware of a decent head unit that allows full control of the ipod (i.e. doesn't limit you to 10 playlists) without all the bling?

Thanks,
Steve

I would seriously consider looking at the interface offered by Harmon Kardon. With this unit you could leave your ipod in the glove box. There is a separate display that you can put anywhere that looks to be about 3" diagnol and a separate controler either of which you can put anywhere. The controller is round and looks kinda like a scroll wheel. If I could figure out where to put the display in our cars and wanted to spend money on an interface this is what I woud buy. I think apple displays the unit on their site or you could check out crutchfield. Mossberg liked this unit alot, I think I remember reading.

Oh year, with this you keep your head unit. This is just an interface.

First contact Becker of North America at (888) 423-3537, and ask for part number BNA.1319.116. This will give you the plug for the rear of the radio and the keys to remove the radio. It cost about $16.00. The below photo shows the plug.

Next go to this link, http://www.autosound2000.com/ipodadapters.htm. This plugs into the cables that Becker gives you and then to the iPod. The best thing about this unit is it charges the iPod while you're using it. It runs about $30.00. This is the photo if the autosound plug.

Both purchases come with great instructions. And if you need some help I have done a couple of these.

I'm doing what Chuck said personally. Becker is back ordered on the part chuck is referencing, probably due to all the RLers calling in at once. Chuck: I got my CDR 220 back from Becker and it looks great. Practically brand new. I need to wait for Becker to get the part and then it's DIY install time!

Chuck, with the Becker cord and the autosound cord, do you have full control of the ipod from the headunit? (i.e. can I scroll through artists, albums, playlists, etc.)?

Steve....No. The only thing the head unit controls is the volume. The readout on the radio says, "AUX". All controls are done on the iPod.
