Question Window Tint: rear window wiper delete?

It looks like I'm gonna have to spring for a re-tint of the windows on Rufus (its too light, has a scratch in the driver side glass, and the cell antenna was removed from the rear window... leaving a small, untinted square), The window tint guy pointed out that to do a seamless piece on the rear window, he'd like to remove the rear wiper mechanism. I said fine... I'd like to leave it off... I never use it anyway, and I prefer the cleaner look without the rear wiper. When done, I'll need some sort of a plug to seal that glass (just in case I ever wash the car, since it will never, ever see rain).

Before I let him start, I thought I'd toss this out here for any relevant (or irrelevant) thoughts on this topic. Good idea? Bad idea? Tips or tricks?

Think of all the weight and aero drag I'm gonna save!

Seems like a good way to save 5 lbs. But wouldn't there be a big gaping hole in the rear deck??

Only a small hole is left in the rear deck. The plastic insert piece that fits around the shaft of the wiper just gets refitted to the deck.

Bummer Steve. I just gave away all of the pieces to do the swap. They cost around $35-40 for some stupid reason at the dealer.....

Yes, I took mine out as well as the interior. I did leave the window in with the hole and used the plug Porsche sells for it.

I got my plug from Sunset Motors. I think it was something like $50 - from the 944 kit. Works perfectly and the DIY is actually very easy - even I was able to do it!

I deleted mine as well... and used the 944 parts to plug the hole in the glass. I also had the rear deck recovered... turned out to be a very clean modification and I like the look a lot better without the rear wiper.

Talking And the results:

Thanks for all the guidance... I just got Rufus home from the tinter. It took me (the doofus extrodinaire) 10 minutes to pull the entire wiper assembly. I couldn't quite spring for the $50 for the Porsche part (not yet, anyway), so the hole is covered with a circle of black vinyl tape. The hole just disappeared! I love it. I went with 5% on the rear window and 20% on the side windows. They did a great job, and they had to remove the old, damaged, and too-light tint. What do you think?

Steve,

Rufus is looking better all the time. What did you go with on the sides and who did you ended up going with?

Tony,

Thanks. I did a 5% tint on the rear window, and all the rest are 20% tint. I used "Advanced Tint by Caesar" in Moorpark. While I was talking to him, the Chrysler dealer was bringing in 300Cs for tint jobs. He was absolutely meticulous with my car.

The wipers are just so useless... everyone knows that Arena Red uses a water-based paint that disolves in the rain.

Chris,

Lets talk about painting calipers: email me directly at ca993twin@yahoo.com

Nice Job, I did mine the same way. 5 and 20. In South Florida the sun can kill the interior very quickly if a car is not tinted.
My 993 is garaged and never sees rain also. Actually it hasn't seen water, never washed yet.
Iv'e been playing around with different polishers and waxes, so it's never been washed. After a ride, I spray it with detailer and microfiber it.

window looks great, but i don't like the look of the two badges (ruf and turbo). they sort of clash; i think the "turbo" one should go...

mborkow,

I am not quite sure what to do with the emblems... it DOES look sorta "busy" back there. The car is, however a Ruf Turbo R... maybe I should add a red "R" next to the turbo? Naaahhhh.
