Fuel Gauge Reads 7/8 When Full
When I fill my tank, my fuel gauge will only read 7/8's full. The gauge seems to work correctly otherwise - properly indicating the remaining fuel once it passes 7/8. My guess is that it's the fuel sender in the tank.
I've searched the forums, but not found anything specific. Anything else I should consider?

Eric, nice rims ...
Did the gauge read full before and suddenly stop going up all the way? My gauge never reads quite full, either, I've always just assumed you can't really fill it up all the way because of the auto shut off on the pump.
If the sender is the same as on the older 911, it's a little float that rides up and down a couple of vertical wires based on the level of the tank. It's possible that the float is getting hung up near the top, maybe there's a deposit or kink on one of the wires. On the older car, the sender was right at the top of the tank under the front lid and very easy to remove. Not sure where it is on the 993, though.

My '97 has never quite reached the full mark. I have tried filling the tank well beyond the auto shut-off with no change in the reading when done.

I bought my 993 used several months ago & didn't check the full operation of the gauge - it was at about 5/8 full at PPI & about 1/2 at delivery. So, I've never seen it at full. I've tried to top it off, but never get more that 7/8 - exactly between the full & 3/4 marks.
I think the sender is similar to older models, but I'll need to check my docs. Looks like another weekend project!

I can always get mine to a little past full. I suspect that the problem for everyone is the float sender that is getting stuck. Both my SC and Carrera cab had the same problem. I think that you can remove the sender and clean it, but as AFAIK most people simply replace them.

I have found that unless a gauge is way off, I just learn how to read each individual unit. Who knows how close to "full" the gauges that stop at the full mark really are????

It is not a floater in the tank but a wire with electric restistance depending on its temperature. The gas in the tank cools the wire which is heated by an electric current. The more gas the less temperature and the more resistance.
I can really imagine that this system is broken.
What does your OBC in the tach say? There is a range indicator. Whether the last 1/8 is there but is not indicated could possibly be guessed from this gauge. Maybe on a long distance trip with constant gas consumption.
A wrong needle adjustment would have to show when ignition is off, wouldn't it? How much gas is left in the tank when the needle is at zero?
Best regards,
Felix
