Default 1st Gear

Hey guys,

At what RPM do you guys normally shift from 1st to 2nd at? I usually shift at around 3k-4k RPMs. Is that RPM too high and working the engine too much? Should I shift at a lower RPM?

When I'm driving around town (from one light to another), I'll usually keep it in 1st gear (< 4k rpms) so I don't have to shift to 2nd and then back to neutral when coming to a stop. This is also the case in stop and go traffic, but when decelerating the car starts bucking. Is that bad for the tranny or other parts of the car?

i shift right away to second. First is just to get the car rolling. Even in traffic, you can crawl along in second (i do) provided you are not at a total stop.

The only bad thing is that i almost got rear ended by a soccer mom in an SUV who was very quick off a stop light. She gave me the finger when i lost a bit of momentum during the shifting from 1 to 2. Think of the irony .. a 993Twin gets run over by suburban bitch driving a Nissan patchfinder. Obviously it was all over once i hit third.

between 3 and 4k is about right...Porsches are not first gear babes...the fun starts from the 2nd up! It's been like this since the 356...no point to bring the first close to redline...

Agree with the comments to date ... plus, I wouldn't lift off the throttle in first gear at 4K to deccelerate as this can stretch things out a bit.

Last weekend I was on a 5 hour TSD (Time Speed Distance) rally, a few sections of which required maintaining 22 mph - in a 25 speed limit no less. Too high for first, and just at the point of lugging it and hearing the "bucket of marbles" from the LWF at under 2K rpm in 2nd. I kept it at 25 in 2nd despite admonitions from my navigator about not winning the beginner's trophy - which we won anyway.

On downhill first gear hairpin turns I left it in 2nd with the clutch in till I exited the turn. Uphill hairpins, I double clutched to first at the right time and back to 2nd coming out of the turn. First gear is such a stump puller that I use it sparingly.

I may be in the minority and ignorant, but I love first gear.... the car with the supercups seems to roar in 1st, especially over 4K. I like to run it out in 1st assuming the car is warm. I would do the same in the other gears, but generally run the risk of a major speed infraction.

Do you have a reason(s) for shifting so soon into second? Seems that doing so and accelerating in second at low RPM would be less than ideal. It could just be me, but I like the sound of the motor spinning above 4k in all gears

Ken-
I found that crawling along at 10-15 mph in traffic was very shaking in 1st as the car would be nervous and would be very jumpy. Oddly i find 1st in the turbo easier than first in my old 993c2 which is odd b/c the turbo is geared lower.
Anyway, crawling in 2nd seemed smoother and as i was not accelerating (due to constant traffic), the motor did not appear to lug and the car seemed happy to roll along more effortlessly. In short, even in heavy traffic, if im still rolling in neutral, i will generally selected 2nd gear. I only select first if im stopped or going 5 mph.

Im happy to be corrected if Im doing something that is bad for the car.
