Default Any tips/tricks to installing new seals/dust boots in 993 calipers?

I'm rebuilding a set of calipers and the first piston's seal & dust boot aren't cooperating. The Brembo instructions say to install the seal, put the boot on the piston, and then insert in so the boot seats. I can't get the boot to seat this way.

I did find a website where the guy says to install the seals, then install the boots. THEN, you pull the boot over the piston (the hard part) and then insert the piston into the bore.

Based on my first result, the second method may make sense. Any input?

My dust boots were cracking from age. I pried them out with a small screwdriver, did a cleaning with some brake cleaner, then pressed in the new boots. Nothing fancy. Pistons stayed in place.

Haven't replaced the piston seals.

Sorry for the belated reply Ed. I was wondering the same. The trick is to slide the dust boots over the top on the pistons, and then slide the dust boot all the way down so that a 1/4” extends beyon the bottom of the piston. Position and seat the dust boot, then press the piston into place and the dust boot will fall right into place.

Apply some brake grease

Press dust boot down over top of piston

Slide dust boot down to the bottom of piston, exposing 1/4” of the dust boot

Seat the dust boot

Press in piston, and done

Ed,
I did as Foxman describeds, only I put a thin film of Vaseline around the seating portion of the dust boot, when I rebuilt my calipers.

P.S. Hope you're enjoying the record snows in Bend! I was up for a few days for my baby sister's wedding in Feb., at Bend Counry Club.

Nice write-up, photos and descriptions, Foxman!

My query was from 2005, and I can't begin to remember how I did them, but I did, and they worked for several years with a lot of track work back in those days! Pretty sure I did what worked in my post. Happy St. Patrick's Day!
