What do you look for in a daily driver

My order of evaluation is pretty much as the original list went, but for daily driver i realy don't care about much other than high reliability and low operating costs. I buy used whenever possible, since they're appliances. Right now my wife has the 'good' sedan (98 Accord EX 4 cylinder bought from someone who HAD to have a new TL) and I drive the 150k mile Subaru wagon. I drive the 993 or the 951 on nice days since indeed life is too short, but they're not that much fun in the traffic I have to navigate.

If I were using a daily driver for commuting purposes (i.e. here on the lovely SoCal freeways) my top priorities would be fuel efficiency, comfort & performance. I haven't had to commute in nearly 4 years, so I'm a bit spoiled right now.

my commute is on side streets here in KC, so i divide the drive between my Harley (nice days) and the 993 (hot days, rainy days, need to pick up a pkg, etc). for airport and winter days, i have an 84 Cimarron
i had a 5spd Accord for a daily driver, and it was okay - we called it a Honda Appliance and i had a A2 GTI - that was by far the best daily car, but the rust bug had set in - i would like to find another one of those in better shape.

Although I drive the 993 as much as I can when the weather is good, my daily driver is a turbo diesel VW Golf. Kind of hard to beat its 44-47 mpg with todays gas prices, especially since diesel is now cheaper than regular gas once again. While it is no sports or luxury car, it is solid, comfortable and handles well. I actually find it very fun to drive.

All of what you mention are things I look for initially, but found that I am usually emotional when I buy my daily driver. It has to be and automatic (for traffic, and the 4 times a year the wife drives it), safe, big enough for my family of 5 (for the 4 times a year that actually happens), comfy, fast is good, A/C is very important.
I may have gone over the top with the E55, but what the hell. It does everything very well and is a riot to drive daily. I have a little problem with longevity of the rear times, I am sure therapy could help that. And I discovered the bonus that my road bike will fit in the trunk if I remove the wheels. Life is good!

But truthfully, with 470 HP... a strong auto. may be a blessing. I could not shift better than this autobox does.

on the cheap...
Golf Diesel? Cheap and renewable fuel source.
Saab 9-2? Swedish tuned WRX is lots of fun
less so...
EVO or STI
personally? Porsche 911 or possibly Cayman.

ok, i have to throw this out there: i pointed out the wrx-sti (which i sorta like) to my girlfriend. her reaction was, "that car says one thing: tiny, tiny, *****." if you are looking to impress women (or at least my woman), i would avoid the sti :-)

Hey Pong,
I went for the comfort and look... therefore all show and no go. I ended up with a e39 body style BMW 528 with new suspension/brakes and rims. I had originally thought about a 540, but with gas prices the way they are now, I am glad I went with the smaller engine. When I need a speed fix, I roll the C4S.
Good hunting,

My 993 HAS been my daily driver since my car was totalled in a flood 6 weeks ago, so it's been exciting and strange. I've been trying to find a replacement checking cars.com and autotrader 3 times a day with no luck! Need a silver with black interior 01 740i Sport under 50k miles. Each one I find is sold!
This is what I want next, and it meets most if not all of your requirements!
It's the same car I had before, just silver instead of anthracite. Cheers!

If this car had heated seats and the wide screen Nav, it would be in my driveway now. It's exactly what I want, with the lowest miles of any car of it's kind in the US that I know of.

Good luck,

1) AWD
2) Good accelleration and handling
3) Euro sporty car feel (drove a Dodge Magnum Hemi and it's just a US hot rod)
4) 4 passenger capability
5) Hatchback or station wagon body
6) No turbos (can't stand the plumbing maze under the hood or the turbo lag; "on cam/off cam" feel of a non-turbo isn't objectionable - go figure)
7) Decent reliability
So, have a '98 Audi A4 Avant (V-6, 5-spd manual, sport suspension and seats) which I am debating about replacing with a new Audi S4 Avant (drove a sedan; S4 feels fabulous!!!)
