Mine was not pinging, very different noise. And, like I said, it went away. My engine is so strong lately....

So did You look at the distributors yet to make sure the belt is not broken? If so it will cause all the issues You describe and the car should not be driven. It will also most of the time not kick a check engine light when broken...

Royal, I had both windows down and it seems as though it's coming from both sides...a little louder from the left side obviously. Thanks.

Hi Jason, i also had a strange 'chatter' at those RPM'S, found it to be loose plumbing under the liner of the divers side rear wheel. Installed three tie wraps, chatter gone! Hope this helps. Royal

I'd like to resurrect this old thread to see if there is anyone who might have this problem (other than me).

I'm experiencing the exact same issue as the OP in this thread and this never seems to have been "solved". At least not here in the forum.

I have experienced this and it was a bearing going out on my alternator. No big deal.

I just replaced mine a "few" miles ago, so I'm assuming that's not the problem for me.

Pinging is a pretty unique sound. You really need to identify if it is pinging, or if it is a rattle. Muffler issue is what I first thought of when reading the OP, but this is a mechanical sound.

Does the car have a LWFW setup?

Having experienced what a failed coil is like, the car not only makes noise, it runs like cr@p.

I don't think your noise is related to a LWF. Having a LWF installed car, the gear chatter that gets into the cabin is at idle with the tranny in neutral. In that unloaded scenario, you are hearing the loose gears rattling on their shafts. Since your noise occurs off idle and under load, I believe gear rattle is not your source.

I jacked up the car and saw that the driver's side of my rear sway bar has a worn looking spot on the paint. My guess is that my exhaust rattles against the sway bar. No idea how to fix it. Check that out though. Just trying to help you eliminate all possibilities. ANy idea how I'd fix this noise besides putting cinderblocks in my backseat?

By exhaust you mean heat exchanger? Do you have thicker sway bar? None of these should be moving and they should have an inch or two of space between them.

edit: never mind 11 year old post

That's partially true. LWF exchagerates the noise you get when driving at 1k-1.5k rpm i.e bogging the engine down, which one generally should not do. But the noise is very significant even without lwf. It's drivetrain noise and very distinctive.
