Default How about magnetic rear stone guards...

that are colored and can be used temporarily and removed? Kinda like the sport team magnetic decals. Anyone heard of such a thing? Removed my old ones and don't really want to replace.

Hi,
Was thinking of removing mine and replacing with 3M product instead.

Question for you: HOW did you remove them? (without messing up the underlying paint etc.) I've heard, for instance, that a 'judicious' application of a hair-dryer 'helps' in the removal. Did you have to use any solvents?

Inquiring minds and all that.

TIA,

Gerry

Heat is key. But not heat from the outside, heat from the inside. Drive the car well and then park in the sun. Wait a few minutes and start pulling.
My first side I did in the garrage on a cool day with a heat gun and it came off in a million pieces.

3M adhesive remover for clean-up. Wax as usual.

I just took mine off of my 1996 targa. It was surprising, but they came off relatively easy and both in one piece. The trick...let your car sit out in the sun for a while, take it into a cool garage and SLOWLY peel off with your hands a little at a time. Use a kinda rolling motion rather than just grabbing and pulling. I also didn't want to re-apply the clear guards again, so I was thinking the same thing about magnetic stone guards. As a matter of fact, I even have one that I cut out of a magnetic bra piece I had and it seems like it might work.
Go to Magbra.com and you will find that they sell magnetic bras for 993s. They are black to start with, but can be painted. Unfortunately you will only be able to get one stone guard out of one side of the front material. I would check with them to see, if in fact, they can send you just a sheet of the material large enough to be able to cut two guards, (a left and right), out of it.
I used an Exacto-Knife to cut through the material. It doesn't look too bad. Still, I haven't driven the car enough to know if it will stay in place at high speeds etc. The compound curves of the 993 rear fender might be a problem. I have to say that my concept is only in the testing stages. Perhaps you could also give it a try and see what you think and let me know your outcome.

Magnetic bras block off 100% UVs, which means, if you leave it on for too long, you will get a two-tone effect later when removed.

Well, turns out I didn't need to either let the car sit in the sun OR use a hair-dryer.
The car is 9 years old and the stoneguard was factory installed. The 'edges' were pretty bad with a lot of 'wax buildup' and, despite my best efforts at 'camouflage' ..they REALLY needed to be removed.
I used the plastic top off a BIC pen and 'lifted' one edge and just kept working it under until I could 'grip' the plastic with my thumb/forefinger.
Now, I'll tell you fellas, this stuff AIN'T cling-wrap! ...it's TOUGH!
Both sides came off in 'one piece' but there was a lot of 'glue' left on the paintwork. I used acetone to first 'soften' the glue and then with a cloth dabbed in the acetone - 'rubbed' the glue - from the edges towards the center - so that it would 'bunch up'/accumulate. Then I'd use a kleenex to 'grab' and 'pull off' the 'high-spots'. This glue is unbelievable!!! It was STILL trying to stick to everything in its path!!! (I think this is the stuff they use to 'cover' your windscreen when you're illegally parked!)
Anyways -- timewise -- it took a good 2 hours to get both rear fenders clear and clean. I can 'see' a slight difference in the color of the paintwork - where the stoneguard 'used' to be -- but nothing that a good waxing won't cure.

The 'fenders' now look a lot better - more uniform in color and appearance - as your eye travels from front to rear - now not having that 'cookie-cutter-like-stamp' (the wax buildup accentuates the cookie-cutter).

G.

Have located replacement 3M rear-fender covers on the 'net and plan on using those. (for the next 9 years?)

If you missed earlier post suggest getting replacements for 96-98 993's. They are slightly larger than the 95's and provide a bit more protection.

Yup thanx.

$28 each. Their pull-down menu does 'differentiate' between the various years/models.

http://www.clearmask.com/vehicle_page.php

Go to 'paint protection kits' (left menu) -- 'online store' (top pull-down menu)...

Specify: "Porsche" - "911/993" -- "1996" and you'll get a scrollable listing. Down towards the bottom is the 'rear fender' covers.
The item number is "195FX".

I really like this idea of a magnetic stone guard for the WB rears. Mine doesn't sit in the sun long enough for UV to be an issue I don't think. I would like to have this magnetic fender guard have extra extra coverage area since the stock one comes nowhere close to covering the full impact zone.

A magnetic fender guard would not work. Any sort of potholes or bumps in the road and it goes bye-bye. A few years ago I tried multiple ones on my white truck I used for work and I was losing them all the time.
