I have a 97-993 C2 Cab with 17 inch wheels. I’d like to upgrade to 18’s. Can anyone suggest the best size wheels?
also do I need to strengthen the front suspension?
finally I know some people use spacers to push the wheel outward, is this necessary-and/or beneficial
Any ideas would be helpful

18s are pretty normal around here. I believe since you are a 97, you should already have the steering brace installed. It'll be a simple check of your steering rack to verify. On a cab, this will be essential to 18s.
As far as spacers on wheels, this can be overcome with the correct offsets for your wheels. If those offsets are not available in your wheel of choice, spacers can help resolve that. Depending on spacer thickness, you may need to run longer wheel studs.
Lots of topics on this stuff but that should help get you started.

8ET52 front w/ 225/40 & 10ET65 w/ 265/35
for track use there is a small edge from widening the track by a few mm, for the street, das macht nichts
some use small spacers w/ the above because they think it looks cool, the down side is less bite by the lug nuts or heavy spacers
I have used 8.5 and 9 on the front of mine but 10 is about the limit for max performance in back, anything wider will usually involve performance compromises like raised ride height
optimized performance will be obtained w/o compromise w/ 8.5 ET54 and 10 ET65, 245/35 and 285/30
