So I get a call from FEDEX about my cover and they want my Social Security number for customs? Is that correct? Or is this some kind of scam? I've never had to do this before when getting something from abroad. Sounds fishy to me.

I had a order that they held up for a few days. needed VIN#/SS# and a bunch of forms faxed back befor customs would clear the parts, then I was hit with a $400 duty. My last order went right through, seems to be hit or miss with Fedex customs.

I did try to find the correct HTS classification for a "car cover" just to be aware of the possible import tax %...unfortunately the Harmonized Tariff Schedule is just like to read Greek
...if somebody else wants to try his luck...address is:
http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm
My guess is: Import tax would be 15% tops...

I would email Gert at gert@carnewal.com on whether this is a legit request from "FedEx".
That sounds fishy.
My was sent on Friday and arrived on Monday.

Please keep us posted on what you find out from Gert on the Fedex customs procedure, etc. With identity theft being the fastest growing crime... I'll send the cover back.

For the last car cover I ordered from Gert (last year), they wanted my VIN #. However, I did not need to give them my SS # or pay any duty on the cover. I think it's hit and miss.

I emailed Gert for you and here is his reply on the topic:
Sometimes US customs randomly picks out parcels for which they need more information.
Usually they want to see a VIN nr or a detailed breakdown, material description or sometimes a S.Sec nr.
We usually ask the customer for the info and we fill out the form.
It’s nothing but a simple procedure where US customs wants to see a name and a signature.
Since Fedex is arranging the import, they are the ones that need to supply the info to US customs.
That’s why the person was contacted by Fedex.

Man, if you miss one week of Rennlist you can REALLY miss out on the cool stuff like this group buy... do you guys ever do "reprises" of these group buys? It might be a great idea for people that were out of town or on the fence at first. Then as people are getting their items, we read about your joy and glee and WE want in on the action, part 2! There might be an even greater response from the slow moving, procrastinating fence sitters the 2nd time around on these items.
I hate to think what I'm going to miss when I'm on vacation at the end of the month... a group buy for 993 sport seats at $2000? the supercup wheels I've been eyeing for $2300 a set? the my02 shifter and emerg brake combo for $625?
Seriously though, do you think we could do a group buy for that MY02 shifter and emerg brake in alum and leather? THAT's the cool thing I'd love to get next...

Update.
Now they called and said there will be a 5% duty on it. Next time Gert should not declare the value over $200. The Fedex rep said that is the threshold for personal duties. Should I pay the duty or send it back. Is this how it is to order overseas? Ridiculous.
