Thanks to everyone for the replies. I guess that I'll be looking for a late 95 model now... The 95s are a little cheaper than the 96+ cars which leaves me a little more money for mods. I just don't really like the look of the handle.

No inspection here in CA. I've never really subscribed to the whole third brake light prevents accidents notion.

Anyway, I'm going too fast for anyone to catch up

If you really don't like it, then either add $1K to you '95 price or get the '96. You can try to see if you'll get used to it but it'll keep on bugging you everytime just like that stone chip you keep on seeing everytime you wash your car.

I'm keeping mine as I get to subtlely brag to other 993 owners that I don't have to deal with OBD II problems

Who knows? I may get even get a little extra downforce

Keeping mine I like it. Kind of a bi-plane look when the rear spoiler is deployed.
But then I like my stock wheels too so.....to each his/her own.
Good luck on your search for a '95. Let us know what you find!

I like my handle. To me, it adds subtle visual interest without interfering with the classic lines.

Keep the handle -- set's the car apart. Also, I'd stick with the 95' to avoid CEL issues. I've owned a few Porsche's and the CEL issue was the biggest pain I had to deal with.

My 96 does too--but that's because it is a cab. Porsche removed them on the coupes that year.

My '96 C4 is a coupe and it does have the handle. Is it possible that because its a late 95 production vehicle?

Cloud964;

Unlikely as late 95's actually had the upper spoiler brake light already... Only the early and middle production run of 1995's had the basket handle AFAIK...

What is the build date on your car? Perhaps previous owner preferred basket handle??

That's what I did and didn't install the 3rd light at all. Saves weight and looks better IMO.

as i understand it there are two problems with getting rid of the basket handle: 1, removing the basket handle and filling in the holes it leaves. 2, hooking up the MY96 third brake light. i don't have any ideas for #1, but i was wondering if you could use the 3rd brake light from a 964 (which is inside the cabin) instead of the 993 MY96+ brake light (for which you need to run wires out side of the cabin). seems like the 964's 3rd light would be a lot easier to install since you don't have to get wires through the rear window...

Don't know what it takes to install the 964 "cyclops" third brake light but make sure you drive a 964 with one before you install it. Mine blocks my view and I've talked to several 964 owners who feel the same way. At just the right distance it can completely hide a car that's behind you. I've gotten used to it but it still bugs me.
I've considered the 993 brake light spoiler (not the basket handle but the 96-98 window one) since I think you'd be able to use the existing wiring.
