Removing the Basket Handle

My initial aversion to the 'basket handle' almost caused me to pass on the car I recently purchased. In the end, I came to my senses (thanks Mark) and realized that I had found a beautifully-maintained '95 and that the silly handle issue is just that - silly. Sure I'd prefer the cleaner lines of the late '95 - '98, but I lucked out with a low-mileage OBD1 example that makes me smile every day.
FWIW, I've read that the early '95 models already have the third brake light wiring hidden under the rear window gasket. May be worth taking a look at if you are considering the swap.

I've got a question.....what if you want to put a wing on the car? Does the entire deck lid come off and then you repace it with the new wing + deck lid? Does this eliminate the problem of the holes in the lid when taking off the basket handle? If so, consider getting a turbo S wing, which is my preference, or any other type of wing to solve the problem.

Rey,
Contact Mark (Baltimore) and ask him to post a few pics of his new wing. If I remember correctly, he removed the entire moveable flap (stock wing) and the new 3.8 wing mounted to the decklid in its place. This would not have covered the basket handle holes.
I'm sure there are other wings available that cover more of the stock lid, or replace it entirely.

As a reversible mod, you can always install a 997 rear brake light on the rear shelf. Held in place with velcro or whatever you chose. For the holes, I used some plastic plugs from Lowes with Automotive goop to hold them in place. My basket handle is stored in case I want to return the car to it's original state.
It is not a proper and clean mod, but it's low cost and reversible.

95 993 basket handle removal. Lowes plugs with 997 3rd brake light.

I removed mine as well. I made a shelf mount 3rd brake light just to keep it street legal.
- $10 thin 12" light bar off amazon.com
- scrap foam padding
-leather to match the shelf (had extra laying around from custom door panels I made)
