Default 95' vs. later..varioram?WTB a 993 should I go 95'?

Looking and looking for the right 993.

Should I completely avoid 95's?

Can they be converted? Should I bother?

I wouldn't bother with converting to a varioram as it's only an extra 12 hp. There are many great '95 993s on this board, so I'm sure you'll get a lot of positive feedback. IMO, you can't go wrong with a well-PPI'd 993, regardless of the year. Good luck w/ your search.

Why on earth would you not go with a MY 95'??? Performance wise there in no difference and it's OBD-I. No CEL issues.

Andy

Do a search on HP dyno readings....... The charts are clear that peak HP is negligable between
a '95 and non-'95. The primary difference is where torque begins to rise at lower RPMs. I'm not so sure one's butt-o-meter can tell the difference.
Considering a negligable HP delta and a simpler electronics package(drive-block, vario-ram, OBD-II), I'd again opt for the '95.

I like the simple key too, but that's easy to change. Mine has the basket handle, if that matters to you.

This has been covered many times, but I'll state again... be careful of getting too excited about the pros of the OBD-I ('95) vs OBD-II ('96 +). True that a '95 won't trigger the CEL for SAI passage clogging, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening or that the valve guides on a '95 are any less prone to wear.

Extraordinary oil consumption caused by worn guides is no less likely on a '95 than any other model.

As mentioned above, I think the biggest plus to the '95s is the earlier version of the On-Board Detector (OBDI), which does ~not~ monitor the Secondary Air Injectors (SAI). This is beneficial because the 96's and newer have the OBDII that will output a Check Engine Light (CEL) if there is carbon buildup in the SAI. With this CEL, you or your future owners won't be able to pass emissions testing, if your state requires it. This is not to say that the 95's don't have carbon buildup--but, it won't prevent you from passing emissions.

This all being said from one who owns a '96.

Default Go With The Best 993 Available Regardless of Year

I test drove several '95s and '96s, and ended up recently getting a '95. My "butt-o-meter" couldn't tell the difference.

Also, although I understand it's not too common, the master technician at Motorwerks (near Chicago) said he's actually had to do valve jobs on '96-'98s to get them to pass the Illinois emissions tests. Something related to varioram.

For me, the only aesthetic thing that I liked a little better on the '96s up was the stereo. It has a digital readout with some verbiage and an in-dash CD (although I have a changer in my '95's trunk).

Based on my limited experience, I agree with others on getting the cleanest car that meets your needs & wants. Good luck with the hunt. It's almost as much fun as owning the car.

As others have said, you avoid the emissions trouble with a '95. The underlying issue is the same. And the varioram is not something most would notice. I like the OBDI. But if I was looking, I would seriously consider and 993, regardless of model year.

I would look for the best 95 or 96 you can find that gets you excited. Don't base your decision on - I will only look at 95's or 96's. Frankly, I cannot tell the difference in HP between 95's and post '95's. If I wanted even more performance from a '95, I would buy Steve's chip.

Car-to-car power variations are more significant than the supposed power differences between 95 and 96. This has been (I think) sufficiently documented, by at least me.

I think a better question is "are the changes in rear suspension geometry in 1996 enough to result in faster lap times?" I don't think anyone knows the answer to that, but I think the answer is probably no.

I looked for a solid year for a 993 and just bought a '95. I suggest as the others to get the best car you can regardless of year.

I did hear that chip upgrades are easier or better (?) for 1995s verse 96-98? I'm not really into that but maybe someone else can comment.

95 does not have the Vram hence much simpler, no VRAM related vacuum leak issues. These are really starting to show up now with the age of of the vacuum hoses they are cracking etc...
