A $60K 355, especially an early one, can turn into a $90K 355 in a years time. Although the 355 is my favorite, just has too much potential spendiness (is that a word) for me.

You are nuts if you think you are going to get a 355 Coupe in any condition except wrecked for $55-60K. High [for Ferrari] Mile ones are still in the high 60Ks to low $70Ks right now, not to mention $7500 "regular" maintenance bills. That is a high cost of rebuilding a 3.6L 993 motor and replacing clutch, flywheel, and valvetrain practically from what I have seen.
If you are looking for a decent condition C4S, keep in mind that you will have to pony up for them. Around $50K is what to expect for one in good condition, so good luck. I think you may be barking up the wrong tree.
Also, for what it's worth, unless your son is reeeeally old or dying or something, it's a dip**** idea to buy him a Porsche, especially a $50K one. Get him a 944 Turbo or something and let him understand the monies involved with even the cheapest P-car. I'm only 24, but I earned the money for this car and it is satisfying as hell to treat myself to a car I have always wanted. It's also scary sometimes thinking about the big bill that could come at any time. Buying a car for a recent college grad, high school grad, etc that is over the top is a horrible idea and teaches your child nothing about the value of hard work, IMO
Sorry for the soapbox, I grew up with a lot of spoiled ****s that are still living on their parents' dime and it is exactly because they always got everything they wanted.

Yeah I would agree with Chris and Cole, there is no way you'll find a 355 for that kind of money. And as one who has had to work for what he has, may I say I find it utterly appauling to hear that you would buy a kid a car of a 993's stature. Set aside that yes they are upwards of 10 years old, you are just setting that kid up for failure. I don't care how much money you have, show the kid how to respect a dollar and strive to drive a car like that by doing the right things in life and EARNING the right to have something like a Porsche or Ferrari. Whats he going to learn by you giving him one? Now I expect a rant back about how brilliant he may be and how well he has done in school......great give him a pat on the back and maybe a nice down payment towards a car he can afford on his own.....make him continue to do well to keep it. 'Cause you know as soon as you give a kid a car, they find a nice tree or ditch to become intimate with on a lonely road somewhere
My first car was a USED '79 VW Rabbit that my folks lent me the money for and I paid every dime back. And now 20 years later, I EARNED the right to own my 993 and I don't owe anyone anything. I enjoyed the ability and the pride of stroking a check for it and driving off in my dream!
Sorry, I'll get off now.

I looked last year at those, and you could get a good one for under 75-80 grand. Another year, I may have to buy one
But I digress, he is not listening! Instead of taking our advise and earning the respect of his peers, he tries to prove us wrong......."you can lead a horse to water"...................I think the horse is deaf!

Nope - I suspect just a dealer/wholesaler looking for a bargain to turn around and make some $. Maybe not, maybe the gent is for real and can find a good car for a low price , hey more power to him. But I doubt it.

Let him buy the Ferrari.....anyone looking for a bargain on a used Ferrari deserves what's coming- Expensive A$$ maintenance......Porsche is generally rated one of the top 3 cars in the market in terms of overall reliability. Although I haven't seen it, I would guess Ferrari is in the bottom 3. Personally, I think old Ferrari's are beautiful but anything built before the 360 (excluding race/special versions) has never looked like it had good fit/finish/build quality.

Hey Mark, You should get that 355 and with your extra money you can buy your son my 951. Maybe after driving a car like mine he'll appreicate what a Ferrari is. There's no one in their right mind who would ever get their child a Ferrari for their first car.
Think of it this way, maitnence certainly wont be an issue because he'll completely destroy the car when he launches it into a tree in the first week driving it. Then you'll be back here on our boards posting in ALL CAPS, looking to spend your money on something else he hasn't earned and doesen't deserve.
Peace in your crease!
